There's an obvious division in the field hockey standings in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League this fall--private schools hold the top three spots, and the public schools make up the second half of the standings.

Mitty topped St. Ignatius 1-0 and fought St. Francis to a scoreless tie last week to improve to 5-0-1 to stay atop the division standings. The Monarchs are 10-0-1 for the year.

St. Ignatius (6-2 overall, 4-2 in league) and St. Francis (7-1-2, 3-1-2) are in a virtual tie for second place, and then come the public schools.

Los Gatos (6-3-1, 2-3-1) holds fourth place in the league race, and the Wildcats are first among the public schools. The Cats split a couple of games last week, beating Monta Vista 2-1 on Friday after losing 3-2 to Prospect earlier in the week.

Goals by Nikki Anderson and Lindsay Herder sparked the Cats to the tight 2-1 win over the Matadors (1-5-1, 1-4-1). Marlana Shile had a pair of assists in the win and Jamie Erickson added one.

The Wildcats lost 3-2 to Prospect (5-4, 2-4) earlier in the week. Teresa Kullick had a goal and an assist and Susie Leckie and Tara McGaffigan each scored for the Panthers in the win. Paige Madsen had three assists for Prospect and Caroline Ogawa added an assist.

The Panthers lost 1-0 to Saratoga (1-4-1) later in the week, though, on a first-half goal by Monica Schroeder off an assist from Alex Block. The Falcons had dropped a 1-0 nod to St. Francis to open the week.

Prospect opened the week with a 3-1 win over Monta Vista, scoring twice in the second half to snap a 1-1 tie at intermission.

Kullick drilled a couple of goals and Madsen had two assists to lead the Panthers to the victory. McGaffigan added a goal and Ogawa, Leckie and Rachel Kullick had assists.

In Santa Teresa Division play last week, Westmont edged University of San Francisco 1-0 and battled Cupertino to a 1-1 overtime tie.

The Warriors (4-5-2, 2-3-2) matched goals with Cupertino in the first half on Thursday, but the clubs played through a scoreless second half and overtime period to finish in a 1-1 draw. Heather Bayley scored off a Courtney Schembri assist to account for the Westmont scoring in the game.

Girls water polo

Junior Caitlin Espe peppered the nets for four goals and Rita Warkov, Sarah Safir and Nicole Zeiter popped two goals each to lead the Los Gatos girls water polo team to a 12-4 win over Homestead last week. Lisa Ratzliff and Alyssa Uno also scored for Gatos in the win.

The victory helped the Wildcats push their record to a perfect 7-0 in the SCVAL's El Camino Division.

Los Gatos backed up that effort with a third-place finish in the Pacific-Gulf Division at the Valley Christian Classic over the weekend. The Cats handled Santa Cruz 9-1 in the third-place game after beating Notre Dame-Belmont 7-0 a day earlier but losing 6-2 to Mission San Jose.

Saratoga lost 6-4 to Mission San Jose in the tourney finals. The Falcons had hammered Terra Nova 12-1 and beat James Logan 7-3 to get to the finals.

Saratoga had lost 14-1 to Palo Alto during the week in play in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Saratoga boys lost 17-2 to Paly in De Anza Division action last week.

Girls tennis

Freshman Kelly Lamble cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over No. 1 singles and Serena Lin and Kara Wang teamed for a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles to lead the Saratoga girls tennis team to a 7-0 shutout win over Palo Alto last week.

The win helped the Falcons improve to 6-1 in the De Anza Division and to 13-1 for the year. Their only loss this season was at the hands of Monta Vista.

Saratoga will host rival Los Gatos on Oct. 13, 3:30 p.m. The Falcons blanked the Cats 7-0 on the first trip through the De Anza Divisions schedule this fall.
