Matt Medeiros had his big day in the sun when Westmont defeated Willow Glen 27-7 on Oct. 15.
Medeiros caught a 70-yard touchdown pass from Westmont quarterback Kevin Pham. The TD was the first for Medeiros in his high school career, but that wasn't his only first of the day. Medeiros also had the first interception of his career.
The Warriors scored three of their four touchdowns in the first half.
Stefan Fowler caught a 45-yard pass from Pham to set up a three-yard touchdown run by Chantz Staden for the first Westmont score.
Fowler had a more direct role in the second touchdown when he carried the ball in from 16 yards out.
The Warriors' third touchdown was scored by Staden on another three-yard run after the squad had driven the distance of the field with little resistance from the Rams.
Medeiros' touchdown was the fourth and final score of the game with Kevin Blakely kicking three of four extra points.
The Warriors' defense held the Willow Glen offense to under 170 yards. "The defense played well," said Westmont head coach Tony Santos, who just received coach of the week honors from High School Sports Focus.
"We're playing one week at a time," the coach said. "This isn't just for the playoffs. There's a lot more at stake--we're starting to build a program."
Pham was completed 15 of 26 passes for 215 yards and the one touchdown.
Staden carried the ball eight times for 50 yards, caught five passes for another 50 yards and had 66 yards on punt returns. Staden also picked off his sixth pass of the year and scored both his 14th and 15th touchdowns of the season.
Will Evans and Ben Prevedelli both stood out on the defensive side of the ball with 1 1/2 sacks apiece. Evans now leads the league in sacks with 7 1/2.
"The effort was there and the enthusiasm was there, but we came out a little flat in the second half," said Santos.
Westmont will host Santa Teresa on Oct. 21, 7:30 p.m., in a game that could decide the championship in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. Santa Teresa is in first place in the division heading into the game, having one more win than Westmont due to the Warriors' tie with Lincoln Lions a few weeks prior.
"We have some tough games coming up," said Santos. "Santa Teresa matches up well against us. They beat us last year and they're very capable of scoring. They are well coached and have a lot of good things going for them."
Prospect-Del Mar
The football teams at Prospect and Del Mar no doubt have their sights set on their Nov. 4 West Valley Division match-up under the lights at Del Mar. But the Panthers and Dons can't lose sight of one other very important thing--that game is still two weeks away.
The two clubs will each play a scrappy San Jose Academy team (3-0 in league, 5-1 overall) in the next couple of weeks, and Prospect will have to get by Yerba Buena, who it will host on Oct. 21, 7:15 p.m.
If they do, the clubs will match identical 4-0 division records and they'll be playing for a league championship and a berth in the Central Coast Section playoffs.
A lot has to fall into place before that happens, but the two clubs each put themselves in position to make it happen with easy victories last week.
The Dons, who will host San Jose on Oct. 21, 3:30 p.m., ran their league record to 3-0 and their season mark to 5-1 with a 35-7 win over James Lick last Friday night.
Prospect, 2-0 in the division and 3-2-1 overall, blanked Overfelt 36-0 on Friday.
The Panthers led just 2-0 after a quarter thanks to a safety recorded by junior linebacker Kenny Bake. But Prospect took over the game in the second period with three touchdowns--a two-yard run by Daniel Huskin-Jones, and scoring passes for 11 and 27 yards from Zach Stevenson to Elvy Harris.
Matt Lamb, who topped the 100-yard rushing mark in the win, scored on a 47-yard run in the third quarter and Wesley Nichols scored from a yard out to close out the scoring in the fourth.
David Matusewicz chipped in with four extra points.
