Rocky second half costly for Westmont
By Kevin Sparrer
It looked so promising at the half. The Westmont Warriors had held down Terra Nova for two quarters and took a 13-6 lead into the locker room at intermission on Nov. 19 in the first round of the Central Coast Section Medium School Division playoffs.

But the wheels came off in the second half for Westmont as the Warriors were stunned 41-0 in the final two periods as the Tigers pulled out a 47-13 victory to advance to the CCS semifinals.

Westmont's season came to an abrupt end. The Warriors finished the year with a 9-1-1 record and share of the championship in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

The Warriors came out in the first half against Terra Nova ready to play. They dropped behind early in the first quarter 6-0, but struck back quickly.

Stefan Fowler was successful on a third and two with a 9-yard run to set up Kevin Pham's 8-yard pass to Bryan Thompson in the end zone for the first Westmont touchdown. Kevin Blakely kicked the extra point to give Westmont the lead 7-6 with only 16 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Westmont's defense held off the Terra Nova offense long enough for the Tigers to miss a 19-yard field goal attempt and return the ball to Warrior hands. Westmont drove from its own 20 into the red zone, but lost the ball on a fumble that Terra Nova recovered. Three plays later, though, D.J. Jackman picked off a pass at the Terra Nova 19-yard line to put the Warriors within striking distance again.

Pham connected with Thompson on a third and eight for a first and goal at the 2-yard line, and two plays later Fowler ran the ball in from three yards out for another Westmont score. The kick failed and Westmont took the lead 13-6 with only 1:15 to go in the half.

Blakely put the kickoff in the end zone forcing the Tigers to start from their own 20. The Warrior defense stood strong again, holding Terra Nova until the clock ran out.

Westmont went into the half leading 13-6 and receiving the ball at the beginning of the third quarter, but it all went downhill from there.

After receiving the kickoff, the Warriors drove only a couple of yards before they fumbled the ball and Terra Nova picked up on the Westmont 40. Again the Warrior defense stood strong, allowing only six plays before Terra Nova was forced to punt.

The Warriors started at their own 6-yard line and after a gain of only a yard, one of the defensive linemen for Terra Nova jumped up and picked off a pass from Pham and ran into the end zone for the Tigers' second score. Terra Nova tied the game 13-13 with the extra point with 7:20 to go in the third quarter.

The Warriors got into the red zone again, thanks to Pham scrambling and Ryan Kanzaki sacrificing his body on a huge block of not only one, but two Terra Nova would-be tacklers. Pham made it inside the Tiger 10, but on the very next play his pass was picked off close to the end zone and returned to midfield. Two plays later, the Tigers broke an option around the left side 60 yards for their third touchdown to take the lead 19-13 with 3:39 to go in the third quarter.

Westmont's offense fell apart after that. They were riddled with turnovers that Terra Nova took advantage of.

Westmont turned the ball over six times in the second half, and every time the Tigers scored.

Despite the outcome, Pham threw for 237 yards on the day, completing 21 of 35 passes behind his line of Will Evans at left tackle, Jeff Andrews at left guard, Ryan Stephens at center, Sean Hutchison at right guard and Dan Parkhurst at right tackle.

Kanzaki caught six of Pham's passes for 95 yards and Chantz Staden, caught five passes for 73 yards. Thompson caught three passes for 26 yards, including one touchdown, and Fowler carried the ball 13 times for 44 yards and one score.

Defensively, Arthur Esterkin led the team with 19 tackles, including two sacks. Behind him was Jackman with 10 tackles and an interception and Fowler with seven tackles and a fumble recovery. Evans had eight tackles in the loss and Kelly Peterson had six.
