Riding a wave of consecutive victories, the Surf Girls of Saratoga were able to "hang 10" opponents as they cruised to an undefeated season in Saratoga's AYSO Region 27.
The Surf Girls, an under 16 soccer team, edged Can't Touch This 2-1 in the final playoff game played Nov. 13 in Los Altos to cap a 10-0 season. The Saratoga girls, who outscored opponents 46-12, won the area championship (the area stretches from Salinas to Redwood City).
The girls won seven straight games in the regular season--scoring five or more goals in five of the wins--and three games in the playoffs.
The team started playing together in the under 8 division in 1997, and three members of that original squad are still with the team today. The team has experienced winless seasons and also some successful campaigns, but this is the first undefeated season.
Members of the team include Alix Bravo, Lexi Kraja, Nadya Carlson-Bowen, Cyra Bender, Lizzi Meyer, Gaby Villa, Lauren Sawyer, Claire Grayeb, Kerrilee Fazzino, Jessie Patterson, Caroline Garfink, Christina Scamporrino and Vera Carlson-Bowen. The team is coached by Dave Meyer, Joe Bravo and Scott Sawyer.
