It was Hartnell winning the conference championship, but it was Ashley Harris who really shined.
Harris led the West Valley College women's cross country team to a second-place finish at the Coast Conference meet. She finished fifth overall, running 19:54 to cut a full 19 seconds off of her previous best.
Though Harris was able to defeat half of the Hartnell runners, her teammates could not and Hartnell took the gold for the third year in a row in the 3.1-mile race.
Behind Harris for the Vikings were Elena Lopez, 10th in 20:25; Jaime Hoyt, 11th in 20:33; Katie Oliver, 12th in 20:39; and Cristina Diaz, 15th in 21:30.
The men of West Valley were not as successful as their female counterparts. The Vikings finished fifth as a team with Hartnell winning in men's division as well.
Kendon Nebeker led the effort for the Vikings, finishing 19th in 22:01;. He was followed closely by Kyle Kurani, 20th in 22:12; Jesus Atanacio, 21st in 22:13; Aaron Sommer, 23rd in 22:24; and Kevin Kelley, 28th in 23:07.
After completing the conference race, West Valley went on to the Northern California championships and, despite having two runners out, the female Vikings finished eighth.
Lopez, one of West Valley's top runners, was out of the race due to an injury and Diaz was forced to drop out mid-race due to a stomach cramp.
With two of its top five runners out, West Valley coach Lisa Renteria feared that the Vikings wouldn't be able to qualify for the state meet since only the top 10 teams advance. But the sixth and seventh West Valley runners, Allison Pound and Christine Nguyen, stepped up to fill the gap and help the Vikes qualify for state.
The male Vikings had similar problems, after one runner shut down after a mile into the race. They were unable to qualify as a team, but sophomore Nebeker was able to qualify with a 42nd-place finish. He was the lone West Valley qualifier.
Earlier, the Vikings had taken part in the annual Crystal Springs Invitational, hosted by the College of San Mateo. The lady Vikings finished in third place as a team, thanks to Harris (11th in 19:34) and Lopez (13th in 19:39). The West Valley women were only separated by 19 places and less than a minute in the 2.95-mile run, with Diaz coming in 19th in 19:54, Hoyt 21st in 19:56 and Oliver 30th in 20:21.
The men of West Valley continued to struggle with a 10th-place finish in the 4.2-mile run.
Atanacio was the first Viking to finish in 23:12 in 37th. Behind him were Sommer, 41st in 23:19; Nebeker, 47th in 23:35; Kelley, 71st in 24:37; and Adrian Arcelona, 78th in 25:04.
