Falcons fall in OT, Pioneer goes on to win LG Shootout
By Bob Scudder
It wasn't an easy journey, but senior Andrew Lerma said follow me and then led the Pioneer Mustangs down the road to the 2005 championship of the Los Gatos Lions Club Wildcat Shootout last week.

Lerma rattled the rim for 27 points in the Mustangs' 66-48 spanking of Live Oak in the championship game and was a constant presence on both the offensive and defensive boards, pulling down 14 rebounds. Lerma was in double digits in all three games of the tourney, totaling 55 points, and was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament for his efforts.

While Lerma was working his magic in the paint, Kyle Fager (nine points) and Nolan Maggipinto (six points) made sure that the outside threat was alive and well by combining for five three-pointers at strategic points in the game. Fager was also an all-tournament team selection.

Pioneer scratched out a 66-64 semifinal win over Leigh to make it to the finals.

Leigh was led by all tournament selections Chris Weber (20 points) and Blake McFarland (13 points).

Pioneer almost did not even make it into the championship bracket when Saratoga put a first-round scare into the Mustangs who eventually pulled out a 60-54 overtime win. Pioneer had a slim three-point advantage at the half but the Falcons fought back to even the score at 43-43 after three stanzas.

The Mustangs found themselves down by four points with less than two minutes left in the game. The defense did its job while the offense put a pair buckets in the hoop to end regulation at 54-54 and send the game to overtime. The Pioneer defense continued to muzzle the Falcons who went scoreless in the extra period and Pioneer escaped with the win.

The Falcons were led by Kia Agahdel with 14 points and Bo Nielson with 13 points. Scott Newberry dumped in nine from the paint.

The Falcons went up against Leland in the semifinals of the consolation bracket and were able to pound out a 44-31 win and knock Leland out of the tourney. The Chargers made it easy for the Falcons, shooting three for 20 in the first half and turning the ball over 10 times.

Saratoga's win over Leland sent the Falcons to the consolation championship where the Willow Glen Rams were waiting. The two teams had met the week before in the semifinals of the consolation bracket of the Westmont Tournament where Saratoga put a 63-38 shellacking on the Rams and Willow Glen was looking for payback. This time around the Rams got some outstanding play from Kyle Schroeder who burned the nets for 22 points, including three buckets from beyond the arc, and led the Rams to a thrilling 52-50 win to take home the fifth-place trophy.

The Falcons held on to a slim 27-25 lead at intermission before Willow Glen exploded for 18 in the third quarter while the Falcons could only find the bottom of the net for six and were looking at a 43-33 deficit. It was role reversal in the fourth when the Falcons got hot and poured in 17 points. The Rams were able to muster nine of their own to hold on for the win.

The Falcon effort was led by the long range sharp shooting of Ryan Matsura and Kia Agahdel each netting 13 points and each bagging three buckets from behind the line. Newberry worked the paint for 12 points and Peter Sclavos dropped in eight.
