Pop Warner football teams dominate competition
By Kevin Sparrer
There's only one word to describe the efforts of the West Valley Pop Warner midget football team: Domination!

The West Valley Falcons crushed the San Marin Mustangs 24-0 on Nov. 26, scoring all 24 points in their first 11 offensive plays.

Will Sparks began the offensive attack, scoring the first touchdown for West Valley on a 2-yard run after Kyle Olugbode broke a 45-yard run to gain a first and goal at the 2-yard line.

The second touchdown came on the seventh play when quarterback Kyle Miller connected with Dominick Arbett on a 35-yard touchdown pass.

Olugbode finished the attack on the 11th play with an 8-yard touchdown run. Miller connected with Arbett for a 30-yard gain to set up the final touchdown.

The Falcon defense held the Mustangs to only three first downs in the game and was able to boast their seventh shutout. Sparks, Joey Vizzusi, Trevor Greyson, Chad Hamil, Olugbode, Arbett, John Batinich and Myles Johansen were the anchors of the defense.

From here, the Falcons traveled to Florida for the second year in a row to compete in the Pop Warner Super Bowl. None of the teams that the Falcons faced last year at this level returned to Orlando.

The Midgets were not the only successful West Valley team this year--the Pop Warner team also had quite a year, making it all the way to the Pacific Northwest championship game before losing 13-0 to Douglas Nevada a game short of going to Florida.

To reach the Pacific Northwest championship game, West Valley first downed Morgan Hill 6-2. Morgan Hill actually entered the game 10-0 and was the No. 1 seed in the tournament.

Matt Pinheiro set up the only touchdown of the day for West Valley, running 50 yards to give the Falcons a first and goal inside the 10. The Morgan Hill defense stood strong and forced a turnover on downs. But the Falcons forced a fumble on Morgan Hills' first down and Alex Abiog recovered the fumble in the end zone for the West Valley score.

Morgan Hill scored its two points late in the game when West Valley held them on fourth and goal at the one-foot line and then took a safety.

West Valley's defense had not allowed a single touchdown in the playoffs until its game with Nevada.

West Valley also defeated Anchorage Alaska in the Pacific Northwest regionals prior to its loss with Nevada.

Kenneth Olugbode was one of the top rushers for the Falcons and he also was a safety, with multiple interceptions and tackles throughout the year.

J.T. Bognanno was the team's fullback and linebacker. He was also the team's leading tackler this season.

Pinheiro was another key running back for West Valley, helped in his efforts by Austin Woodard, Zach Artman, Ian Harbel and Dominic Luca on the offensive line. Daniel Longanecker and Jeff Bechtel were other offensive standouts.

Abiog, Bret Bigger, Nich Walthier, Marcus Mikl and Trevor Flint were also big contributors to the Falcon defense this season.
