Wrestlers win at Castro Valley and Overfelt at the same time
By Dick Sparrer
It's tough be two places at one time, but the Saratoga wrestling team turned the trick last week when six Falcons competed in the Castro Valley Bay Area Varsity Invitational and 15 others took part in the William C. Overfelt Frosh-Soph Tournament.

Spencer Sevilla led the Saratoga effort by winning an individual title at the varsity level at Castro Valley. Sevilla won the title at 152 pounds.

Doug Macklin was fourth at 130 pounds, Allen Chen was fifth at 125 and Scott Surrette was sixth at 145 to round out the list of Saratoga placers at Castro Valley.

Sophomore Kyle Patzman and freshman Jasper Loren each won titles for the Falcons at Overfelt. There were separate brackets for the freshman and sophomore wrestlers.

Patzman was first at 189 pounds in the sophomore class with teammate Ryan Stoffers sixth at 130.

Loren led the Saratoga effort in the freshman division with his first-place finish at 140 pounds. Jens Karren was second at 145, Nathan Nguyen was third at 97, Justin El-Diwany was third at 130, Philip Chen was fourth at 135, Mike Kiely was fifth at 135 and Raymond Boales was fifth at 171.

The Falcons had opened the season a week earlier at the Pirate Frosh-Soph Tournament at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz. Nguyen (70-95 pounds) and Zack Kowitz (207-216) were individual champions with seconds going to Richard Macklin (97-102), El-Diwany (130-131) and Samir Mathur (153-157) and thirds to Kevin Kingery (127-129) and Kiely (133-136).

Saratoga will open the league season at home on Dec. 15, 5:30 p.m., when the Falcons host Homestead for a match in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Falcons will send wrestlers to the Coast Classic in Scotts Valley on Dec. 16-17 and to the Lynn Dyche Invitational at James Lick on Dec. 17 before breaking for the holidays.
