Mt. Hamilton leaders are tops in CCS
By Kevin Sparrer
League competition was as tough as ever when Archbishop Mitty and St. Francis finished one-two in field hockey in the rugged Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

And the Monarchs and Lancers proved just how tough the Mt. Hamilton circuit is when they went on to tie for the Central Coast Section championship.

Mitty, a CCS co-champ for a second straight year, proved its worth this season by winning league and CCS titles, and the Monarchs were rewarded for their efforts when eight players received all-league recognition.

Senior Nora Souza was named the division's Most Valuable Player and junior Katie Fleury received the Outstanding Junior of the Year award. Seniors Kate Holcomb, Casey Ducheon, Rachel Carney and Molly Busch were all-league first team players and senior Kelly Enfantino and junior Jennifer Maez were both named to the second team. Mitty's Justin Williams was named the Coach of the Year.

St. Francis also boasts a number of all-leaguers. Senior Kathryn Kamenski was honored with the co-Senior of the Year award and seniors Erin Lemmon and Nichole Schuer and junior Soula Ellenikiotis eached placed on the first team all-league. Sophomore Steph Byrne and senior Ashley Nucera were named to the second team.

The Saratoga Falcons also had a few girls make the cut: senior Caroline Charles was named first team all-league and seniors Alex Block and Katie Barco were awarded second team all-league.

Prospect senior Erica Kallio was named to the first team and junior Paige Madsen and senior Megan McGaffigan were picked to the second team.

Lynbrook's Corin Imai was the Santa Teresa Division's Senior of the Year and Megan Shimojima was the Sophomore of the Year. Seniors Marissa Avina, Noreen Moniveur and Erin Yasukawa were all named to the first team all-league and senior Taylor Hasco and sophomore Ellice Kang both made the second team.

Westmont also made its mark. Junior Courtney Schembri was named Junior of the Year with senior Lynley Takaki claiming first team all-league honors and sophomore Nicole Bayley and senior Erica King were named to the second team.

All-De Anza water polo

Goalies in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League's rugged De Anza Division are challenged each game by some of the most powerful shooters in the CCS.

Monta Vista's Onur Erbilgin came through his senior water polo season with flying colors, earning the distinction of Most Valuable Goalie for 2005.

Erbilgin, along with Most Valuable Player Brandon Johnson, heads a list of 15 players picked to the all-De Anza boys first team.

Senior Kevin Shiuan and junior Marko Pance of Saratoga were on the honorable mention list.

Senior Kevin Jian of Lynbrook is the Most Valuable Goalie in the El Camino Division. Jian and MVP Bryan Bishop of division champion Mountain View are among 15 players on the all-league first team.

Other recognized water polo standouts include senior Jake Parrish, junior Brandt Robinson and sophomore Matt Cai of Lynbrook.

Junior Steven Nguyen of Lynbrook was on the honorable mention list.

In girls water polo, Saratoga senior Courtney Nolet and Cupertino junior Megan Dykema are among nine players joining Most Valuable Player Phoebe Champion of Palo Alto on the De Anza Division's first team. Two other Falcons, sophomore Hayes Hyde and freshman Marcy Lopez, are on the second team.

Girls volleyball

Homestead ran the table in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL to finish league play undefeated and take home the girls volleyball championship. So it came as little surprise to see the Mustangs dominate the all-league selections with seven players winning honors, including Most Valuable Player, senior Christina Fukumoto.

The El Camino Division first team selections also included seniors Janice Tram and Janine Tram of Lynbrook. Lynbrook junior Emily Shen was on the honorable mention list.

The SCVAL De Anza Division championship was claimed by the Los Gatos Wildcats, who had a wealth of senior leadership and talent. At the front of the pack was senior Nina Sevastopoulos, who was named as co-MVP of the division. She shared the honor with Mountain View senior Chelsea Ligda and Gunn senior Maile Krauss.

Saratoga seniors Kristie Morrison, Sarah Suboda and Erica Wong received all-league first team honors and the honorable mention list included senior Paige Henry from Saratoga.

Junior of the Year honors went to Shelby Anderson of Westmont in the BVAL's Mt. Hamilton Division. She was joined by Ashley Britton as a first team selection and Kristen Obermeyer on the second team.

Prospect dominated action in the BVAL West Valley Division, completing a perfect 12-0 mark to claim the championship, and six Panthers received all-league honors.

Topping the list was senior Lizzie Miller as the MVP of the division. She was joined by Junior of the Year Kendra Rimbach and Sophomore of the Year Tessa Fischer. Prospect had a pair of first team selections in senior Kimmie Osborne and junior Brittany Ross-Badllo. Junior Janaye Fletcher was a second team selection.
