Weimer, Staden paces Warriors to win

Michael Weimer and Chantz Staden scored nearly two-thirds of Westmont's points in a league game against Piedmont Hills last week, and the Warriors were able to a roll to a 69-55 win over the Pirates with their teammates coming through with the rest.

Weiner put up 23 points, including a pair of three-pointers and five free throws, and Staden was close behind with 21, including two threes and five from the line.

Spencer Smith had nine points with three from outside the arc. Ryan Kanzaki had seven points with three from the line, Darrien Broadnax had six points with four free throws, Nick Twitchell had two points and Kyle Nielson had a free throw.

Westmont also defeated Leigh 45-42 last week. Weimer and Staden had 14 points apiece, each win a three-pointer. Weimer also had five free throws and Staden had one. Kanzaki had eight points with two threes, Broadnax had six with two at the line and Smith had one three-pointer.

Westmont is 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League. The Warriors will visit Pioneer on Jan. 11, 7 p.m., and will head to Branham on Jan. 13, 7:30 p.m.

In Santa Teresa Division play, Elvy Harris was on fire for Prospect last week. But as it turns out, he wasn't hot enough to ignite Prospect to a win over Willow Glen.

Harris scored 16 points in Prospect's 54-47 loss to the Rams. Of his 16 points, two came at the free-throw line.

Also putting up a good numbers for the Panthers was Edric Egberuare who scored 10. Zach Stevenson added seven points with a three-pointer and Kendall Hendon had eight with two threes. Natnael Taye scored four and David Matusewicz had two.

Prospect was to host Leland on Jan. 10 and will visit Andrew Hill on Jan. 13, 7:30 p.m.

The Saratoga boys, meanwhile, got off to a strong start in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division season. The Falcons, 10-6 for the year, opened league play with a 73-46 win over Santa Clara and came back two days later with a 48-34 win over Monta Vista.

Junior Bo Nielsen started league play off right with a 24-point effort in the win over Santa Clara. Nielsen tossed in a pair of threes among his eight field goals and added eight points at the line.

Senior Kia Agahel supported with 19 points, also hitting a pair of threes. Ryan Matsuura finished in double figures with 13 points, including a three, and Scott Newberry was also in twin digits with 10.

Keon Ghafouri tossed in a three for the Falcons and Nick Valluri and Sean Casserly added two each.

Newberry pitched in 13 points to lead the Falcons to the win over the Matadors. Nielsen added 11 points, including a couple of three-pointers.

Matsuura had nine points and Agahel had seven, and each one popped a three. Ghafouri hit a three-pointers, Casserly had three points and Peter Sclavos canned two.

The Falcons will try to make it three straight in league when they visit Wilcox on Jan. 13, 7:45 p.m.

Prospect's girls defeated Lick 59-16 on Jan. 5 in a non-league game, almost outscoring James Lick in the first quarter alone.

Prospect was hot from outside the paint, with four players hitting threes and two hitting more than one. Shelly Otaguro led the team with 13 points, including three threes, while Taylor Kikuchi had 11 points with two beyond the arc and three from the line. Zlata Malicevic had 10 points, Corissa Hulick had eight, including a three and a free throw, Jennifer Jasper had eight, Jen Ton had seven, with a three, and Leah Williams had two.

Prospect also defeated San Jose Academy 55-26 on Jan. 3. This time it was Malicevic leading the pack with 16 points, with two at the line, and Jasper had 14. Otaguro had eight points with two free throws; Ton had five with a three-pointer; Kikuchi had seven with a three; Williams had three with a free throw; and Hulick had two.

The Prospect ladies will host Andrew Hill on Jan. 12 and will travel to Lincoln on Jan. 19. West Valley Division games begin at 7 p.m.

The Westmont girls lost a close one to Piedmont Hills on Jan. 6, 42-41. Lynley Takaki was the leading scorer for Westmont with 17 points, including a three and eight free throws. Tichelle Thomas added nine points, including one at the line, and Evelyn Lopez had eight with two outside the arc. Megan Scheibli had five points with a free throw and Krystal Wahl had two points.

The Warriors had a tougher time against Leigh, losing 50-39 on Jan. 4. Takaki had another 17 with a three and four free throws, Lopez had seven with a three and two from the line, Scheibli had seven with a free throw, Wahl had six including two free throws and Robyn Araujo had two points.

Westmont was to visit Pioneer on Jan. 11 before going to Leland on Jan. 13. Mt. Hamilton Division games begin at 7 p.m.

The Saratoga girls opened the El Camino Division season with back-to-back losses, falling 50-46 to Fremont and 44-22 to Monta Vista.

Senior wing Paige Henry had solid back-to-back games. Henry tossed in a team-high 11 points against Monta Vista, including a three-pointer, and she had a couple of threes among her 12 points against Fremont.

Senior guard Katie Reed was the Saratoga scoring leader against the Firebirds with 17 points. She also hit a three.

Mika Lewis had a three among her nine points. Alex Sclavos added four points and Vanessa Guzman and Sonali Sheel hit two apiece.

Henry was Saratoga's scoring leaders against the Matadors with her 11. Sclavos was next with three points, Reed and Lewis had two each and Tiffany Poon, Jessica Lu, Guzman and Tamara Schroeder hit one each.

The Falcons, 2-11 for the year, will be back in action this week when they visit Mountain View on Jan. 13, 6:15 p.m.
