Cub Scouts gathered bright and early at Argonaut Elementary School for the annual Pinewood Derby race on Jan. 8. Toiling all through December, the scouts worked on designing the most aerodynamic and frictionless cars to compete at the derby.
Scouts in the first through fifth grades raced cars and the day kicked off with heats in each of the dens. In order to win, scouts had to first survive their den races. The top three cars from each den then went on to compete in the pack race. The top two from the pack race will go on to compete at the district level.
While fourth-grader Ryan Mabanta and fourth-grader Kush Maheshwari share the first-place prize, Kush and fifth-grader Arush Shankar, who took second, will represent Pack 508 at the district level.
Lined up and ready to race, scouts try to make the most aerodynamic and frictionless car while staying within height, weight and length regulations.
