Chantz Staden and Michael Weimer fueled the Westmont fire as the boys basketball team burned past Branham and Pioneer last week in Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division play.
Staden led the Warrior offense past Branham 62-57 on Jan. 13 with more than a third of the team's points. Staden scored 21 in the contest with five at the line and six points from outside the arc. Weimer scored 17 points with six free throws and one three-pointer.
Spencer Smith added nine points, all coming from outside the arc. Ryan Kanzaki scored eight for the Warriors with four at the line and Darrien Broadnax scored seven with a three-pointer.
Staden and Weimer were also the team leaders against Pioneer on Jan. 11. The Warriors defeated the Mustangs 57-42 with Weimer scoring 19 with seven at the line. Staden put up 14 points with two free throws and two buckets from outside the arc.
Kanzaki scored nine with a three-pointer, Broadnax scored eight with four free throws, Smith had a three-pointer, Kyle Nielson had two from the line and Nick Twitchell had a field goal.
The Warriors are to play Oak Grove at home on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. and then travel to Santa Teresa on Jan. 20 for a 7 p.m. start.
The Westmont girls lost a couple of close ones to Leland and Pioneer on Jan. 11 and 13. Westmont dropped its game to Leland 55-54 after leading 29-26 at the half. Lynley Takaki and Megan Scheibli led Westmont with 16 points apiece. Scheibli had four free throws and Takaki had two at the line and six points outside the arc.
Evelyn Lopez had 11 with one three, Tichelle Thomas had five with one at the line, Krystal Wahl had four with two free throws and Kelly Gregg had two.
Westmont lost to Pioneer 56-45 despite Scheibli scoring another 16 points. Scheibli had two from the line. Wahl stepped up with 10 points, Lopez had six with two three-pointers, Takaki finished with five points with one shot from outside the arc, Thomas had four and Gregg and Robyn Araujo both had two.
Westmont will meet Oak Grove at the home of the Eagles on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. before hosting Santa Teresa on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
The Prospect boys defeated Andrew Hill on Jan. 13, 70-58, to even their record at 2-2 in league and push them to 10-7 overall.
Elvy Harris led the Panthers with 28 points, including two from the line. Zach Stevenson joined Harris in double figures with 13 points, including two from the line and one from outside the arc. Natnael Taye also had 12 for Prospect including two from the line. Edric Egberuare had eight, with three at the line and one from three-point land. David Matusewicz had four points, Kendall Hendon and Jason Ohlhaver each had two and Calvin Garduque had one from the line.
Prospect dropped one to Leland on Jan. 10, 61-46. Egberuare had 17 in the loss, including four at the line and one three-pointer. Harris had seven with one free throw, Stevenson and Taye both had six and Taye had two at the line. Hendon and Matusewicz both had five, Hendon had a three and Matusewicz had a free throw.
The Panthers were to face Evergreen Valley on Jan. 17 before hosting Silver Creek on Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.

Shelly Otaguro scored 11, including four from the line and one three-pointer; Taylor Kikuchi had 11 with seven from the line; Corissa Hulick had 10 with two free throws; Kristen Tranberg scored eight with four at the line; Jen Ton had six; Leah Williams had five with three free throws; and Malicevic had four.
On Jan. 10 Prospect defeated Andrew Hill 67-29. Jasper was the points leader with 14, Williams had 10, Otaguro had nine with seven of them coming from the line, Hulick had seven with a three and two free throws, Kikuchi also had seven with a three and two free throws, Ton and Tranberg each had six and Malicevic had four.
Prospect will travel to Lincoln on Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
The Del Mar boys defeated Independence 66-50 on Jan. 13 to bring them to 2-1 in league and to 5-11 overall.
Mike Balandra led the effort for Del Mar with 23 points, including a free throw and four threes. Nick Bourdens had 13 for the Dons with three from the line; Jake Steeves was next with eight; Travis Masterbone finished with six, including a three and three from the line; Arron Mollet scored five with a free throw; Billy Buxton had four; Dallin Blank had three with a free throw; and Shiva Vashishat and Dereck Walls both had two, with both of Walls' points coming from the line.
Del Mar was to face Lincoln on Jan. 17 and will travel to Mt. Pleasant on Jan. 20 for a 7:30 p.m. start.
The female Dons have lost their last two, falling to Branham 59-32 on Jan. 12 and to Independence 39-25 on Jan. 10. These two losses have left Del Mar 0-4 in league and 1-12 overall.
Kellene Condie was again the lead scorer for Del Mar with 16 against Branham, including a three and three from the line. Emily Holm had eight, Sara Quilici had five with one at the line and Alana Guzzetta had three with one free throw.
Condie led the team against Independence with eight, while Guzzetta had seven with one from the line. Quilici and Christina Vermy had four apiece and Holm had two.
The Dons were to take on Evergreen Valley on Jan. 17 before hosting Silver Creek on Jan 19 at 7 p.m.
