There wasn't much time left. The clock was ticking down in the 189-pound bout as Saratoga's Kyle Patzman worked for a pin against his Lynbrook opponent.
Finally, with just eight seconds left to wrestle, the referee's hand slapped the mat and Patzman had his pin in Saratoga's 48-22 win over the Vikings in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
It was one of four pins for the Falcons in the dual match win. Doug Macklin won by fall in the second period at 130, and Scott Surrette pinned in the first period at 145. Zack Kowitz pinned in the third at 215 and Patzman won by fall in the final seconds at 189.
Allen Chen pulled out a tight 5-2 win at 125 pounds and Johnathon Venuti won 9-5 at 171 to round out the list of Saratoga winners in the match.
Macklin and Spencer Sevilla each made it to the second day of the rugged MidCal tournament in Gilroy last weekend, and Sevilla managed to make it to the medal stand. Sevilla finished fifth at 152 pounds for the Falcons.
In a league dual match the week before, Saratoga rolled over Harker School 60-13. First-period falls by Jeffrey Nguyen at 112, Chen at 125, Macklin at 140 and Surrette at 145 keyed the win. Doug Macklin pinned in the second round at 130 and Sevilla won by fall in the third at 152.
Richard Macklin lost a 4-2 heartbreaker at 103 and Holden Sparacino at 119 and Stephen Chu at 135 were each stuck with losses.
In tournament action at San Ramon Valley High School on Jan. 14, Sevilla beat Paul Nevarez of Live Oak 7-5 to finish third at 152 pounds and Venuti lost to George Gutierrez of Buhach Colony to finish fourth at 171.
The Saratoga frosh-soph wrestlers got in on some tournament competition in recent weeks, winning six medals at the Los Gatos tourney and six more the following week at Del Mar.
Jasper Loren posted a 4-0 record to finish first at 142 pounds at Los Gatos. R. Macklin was second at 100, Ryan Stoffers was third at 132, Patzman was fourth at 191, Nathan Nguyen was fifth at 100 and Jens Karren was fifth at 147.
R. Macklin and Kowitz were each undefeated to win individual titles at Del Mar. Macklin took the 98-pound crown and Kowitz won at 217 after pinning all three of his opponents.
N. Nguyen was second at 98, Stoffers was third at 132, Loren was third at 142 and Samir Mathur was eighth at 154.
