Falcons win big after loss to Pioneers
By Dick Sparrer
It was tough for the Saratoga boys basketball team to get over a 48-37 loss to Cupertino in the battle for first place in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

But there was really only one thing the Falcons could do after the loss to the Pioneers dropped them into second place in the division--forget about it!

And it seems like that's just what the Falcons did.

Saratoga rebounded from the 11-point loss to the Pioneers to win three straight, crushing Lynbrook 62-15 before beating Los Altos 62-42 and Monta Vista 66-45 last week.

The three wins helped push the Falcons to 6-1 in division play and to 13-7 for the season. They sit just a game behind Cupertino in the league standings.

The Falcons jumped off to a quick start and never looked back in each of their two wins last week.

Saratoga opened up a 19-7 lead by the first buzzer and a 39-21 advantage by intermission on the road to a 20-point win over the Eagles to open play last week.

Scott Newberry had the hot hand for the Falcons in the win over Los Altos. The 6-foot-3 senior poured in 22 points for Saratoga, banging in eight buckets from the floor and adding six points at the free-throw line.

Kia Agahdel had a three-pointer among his four field goals to finish with nine points and junior Nick Valluri tossed in seven points.

Ryan Matsuura drained a pair of threes to wind up with six points and Keon Ghafouri added six. Bo Nielsen added five points, Peter Sclavos had four and Kourosh Agahdel hit a three.

It was more of the same later in the week against Monta Vista. The Falcons led 18-4 after a quarter and turned it up a notch to outpoint the Matadors 25-16 in the second to take a 23-point lead in at intermission, 43-20.

Nielsen was the big scorer with 19 points, including four buckets from behind the arc.

Matsuura finished in double digits with 11 points, Kia Agahdel added nine points and Ghafouri had seven. All of them hit three-pointers.

Sclavos chipped in with eight points, Newberry had five, Kourosh Agahdel, Andy Capek and Valluri hit two each and Sean Casserly had one.

The Falcons are on the road for two games this week. They visit Santa Clara on Feb. 1, 7 p.m., and head to Wilcox on Feb. 3, 7:45 p.m. Wins in each of the two games would send them up against Cupertino in a battle for first place when the Pioneers visit Saratoga on Feb. 8.

In girls basketball action last week, the Falcons lost two tough three-point decisions last week, falling 38-35 to Monta Vista and 44-41 to Los Altos.

The Falcons got off to a good start against the Matadors, leading 6-3 after a period and 15-10 at the half. But Monta Vista blasted Saratoga 18-9 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Freshman Alex Sclavos was the scoring leader for the Falcons in the loss with nine points, including four buckets from the field. Seniors Mika Lewis and Tiffany Poon had eight points apiece.

Katie Reed buried a three-point bucket and Vanessa Guzman added three points. Paige Henry and Lisa Ruddy rounded out the scoring with two points each.

It was a different story for the Falcons earlier in the week against Los Altos, but the results were the same.

Saratoga fell behind early in this one, trailing 18-12 after a quarter and by 12 points after three periods, 42-30. The Falcons battled back to top the Eagles 11-2 in the fourth quarter only to come up three short, just as they would against the Matadors.

Sclavos was the Saratoga scoring leader with 14 points, including six field goals and four points from the free-throw line. Junior Tamara Schroeder supported with eight points.

Reed and Henry had four points each, Ruddy and Guzman hit three apiece, Lewis two and Katie Low one. Henry popped a three.

The Falcons, 2-5 in the El Camino Division and 3-15 for the year, were to visit Fremont on Tuesday and will be home on Feb. 3, 6:15 p.m., to face Mountain View.
