It was almost as if the seniors were showing off a bit.
But, then, who could blame them. After all, it was Senior Recognition Night when the Saratoga High School wrestling team played host to Los Altos last week for a bout in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
And six of the seven seniors honored at the Thursday night match pulled out victories to lead the Falcons to a lopsided 54-22 team win over the Eagles.
The win helped the Falcons improve to 4-1 in division action heading into the final week of the dual match season. Saratoga closes out the season on the road at Santa Clara on Feb. 9, 6:30 p.m. At the same time, Milpitas visits Homestead for a match that should allow the Trojans to clinch the division crown. Milpitas take a 5-0 record into the bout.
Even though it looks like Saratoga will finish just a notch behind Milpitas in the division standings, the Falcons will get another shot at the Trojans when they meet again at the league finals set for Feb. 11 at Los Gatos. The junior varsity finals are set for Feb. 10 at Gatos.
Seniors Jeffery Nguyen, Allen Chen, Stephen Chu, Derek Macklin, Scott Surrette, Spencer Sevilla and Johnathon Venuti were recognized before the bout against Los Altos, then they went about their work to down the Eagles.
Nguyen, Chen, Chu and Surrette really made the most of senior night when they won by fall against the Eagles.
Nguyen pinned in the first round at 112, and Chu pinned in the first at 135. Chen came through with a third-round fall at 125, and Surrette pinned in the third at 145.
Sevilla rolled to a technical fall with a 22-5 victory at 152 pounds, and Macklin pulled out a 9-5 decision win at 140.
Venuti lost a tough decision at 171 to round out the senior performances.
Richard Macklin, Ryan Stoffers and Zack Kowitz were underclassmen who joined the list of Saratoga winners. Macklin blitzed his foe 11-0 at 103, Stoffers pinned in the first round at 130 and Kowitz won by fall in the first at 215.
In other recent action, Jasper Loren starred for the Falcons at the Wilcox Charger Frosh-Soph Tournament last weekend. Loren won an individual title at 142 pounds to lead the Saratoga effort.
Stoffers nailed a third-place finish at 132 pounds and Nathan Nguyen ended up fourth at 105.
