Local seniors who just want to feel young at heart should mark their calendars for Feb. 12.
This Sunday the Young at Heart Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of institutionalized seniors, presents a concert, "Unforgettable Sounds: Four Decades of Popular Music," in the Villa Montalvo Carriage House, 15400 Montalvo Road in Saratoga, at 2 p.m.
The concert will feature music by YAHP artists Shanna Carlson, Johnny Fabulous and Penny Hanna, who is a member of the Jazz Birds, which will also be performing.
The concert, a $35 value, is free to seniors 62 and older on a first-come, first-served basis. The general public is also invited to attend as space allows, with donations to YAHP being accepted.
YAHP was founded in Santa Cruz County in 1985 by artistic director Sean Seman. The organization has been active in Santa Clara County since 1997. More than 1,000 performances are presented yearly, at more than 90 facilities.
"Our sole purpose is to bring professional musical performers into nursing homes, assisted living facilities and senior residential facilities to perform the music of Jolson, Crosby, Sinatra, Garland, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and George Gershwin, just to name a few," says Gary Newquist, YAHP board member. "Who could not feel passionate about bringing music into the hearts of the isolated elderly?"
YAHP plans to move its administrative offices to Santa Clara County in 2006, and is looking for a suitable location.
