Young Falcons off to winning start on the volleyball court

There must be times when Saratoga coach Brad Frederickson feels more like he's running a day care center than a boys varsity volleyball program--that's how young his Falcons are this season.

Well, that may a bit of an exaggeration, but Saratoga is sending a young team to the floor this spring with only three seniors on the 11-player roster that's dominated by sophomores.

But Frederickson doesn't seem too disappointed with the hand he's been dealt. Sure the Falcons are young, but they're winning, too.

Saratoga knocked off Harker School 3-1 last week to improve its season record to 5-3. The Falcons now prepare to enter the rugged race in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

The Falcons were to get their first test on March 14 at Los Gatos, and they'll be back on the court March 16 at Lynbrook, 6:45 p.m. Saratoga will take part in the Harker Tournament on March 18 before returning home for a league match against Mountain View on March 21, 6:45 p.m.

Saratoga kept its season record over the .500 mark this season with the hard-earned 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-20 win over the Eagles last week.

Sophomore Mike Vetrone led the Falcons with 11 kills and two service aces. Junior Ammar Kothari supported with seven kills and soph Kent Johnson had four kills, two blocks and an ace.

Nick McConnell, another sophomore, had four kills and an ace and was the Saratoga assist leader.

Earlier in the week, the Falcons had dropped a close one 25-18, 25-12, 21-25, 27-25 to Aptos. Vetrone was the kill leader with 11 and he added six aces. Senior middle blocker Peter Sclavos had six kills and two blocks for the Falcons.

Saratoga had opened the season with a 25-19, 25-16, 25-12 win over Pioneer in a non-league match. Senior James Liao had seven kills to lead the Falcons.

Vetrone came through with an impressive 22 kills in a 21-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-20, 15-12 non-league win over Scotts Valley. Johnson had five kills and eight blocks in the win and McConnell was the team's assist leader.

Saratoga posted a 2-2 record to finish seventh in the Campbell Classic Tournament. Doug Sabella was the Falcons' kill leader in the tourney with 12, Johnson had 10 and Vetrone added nine. Sabella, also a sophomore, was the team leader with eight service aces.

Sclavos, Liao and Jamie Pak are the only three seniors on the Saratoga varsity squad this spring that also includes sophomores Vetrone, Sabella, Johnson, McConnell, Mike Hutchins and Jason Chun, junior Kothari and freshman Shawyon Malek.
