Tough start for Saratoga baseball team

It's been anything but a glorious start for the baseball at Saratoga High School.

The Falcons opened the year with two losses in the Mike Hazlett Baseball Tournament, then dropped two straight to open the year in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

But the season is young, and the Falcons will be back on the diamond to try to turn things around this week with three games--two of them at home.

Before the homestand, though, the Falcons will hold a short ceremony to recognize those who have contributed so much to the Saratoga High School Baseball Field Renovation Project. The cost of the project was more than $500,000.

Prior to Saratoga's 3:30 p.m. home game against Los Altos on March 16, the Sports Boosters Club "will be unveiling a new plaque on the wall of the scorer's booth behind home plate, recognizing the very generous contribution of the Steve and Shelley Newberry family that made this all happen," said Mark Linsky of the Boosters Club.

"Not only have the Newberrys helped with their donation, but both of them have been very active as leaders of the Sports Boosters for years," Linsky added.

The 10-minute ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m., after which senior and his Saratoga teammates will take the field against the Eagles.

The Falcons, who were to visit Homestead on March 14, will be back home on March 18 in a noon game against Monta Vista before traveling to Santa Clara on March 21, 3:30 p.m.

Saratoga has already had one run-in with the Bruins this season, and it didn't go well for the Falcons. Santa Clara broke open a tight 3-2 game with four runs in the seventh to pull out a league win.

The Bruins had taken an early lead with a run in the second, then made it 3-0 in the sixth. But Saratoga answered back with two in the home half of the sixth to trail just 3-2 heading into the final inning.

Sean Casserly had two of Saratoga's five hits and drove in both of his club's runs.

The Falcons had fallen 3-2 to Lynbrook a couple of days earlier. Saratoga jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first, but the Vikings rallied for three in the fourth and that would stand up for the win.

Newberry singled and tripled for Saratoga in the game.
