St. Petersburg Men's Quartet will perform in Saratoga

By Jennifer McBride

St. Archangel Michael Serbian Orthodox Church wants to shout it from the rooftops--the local parish will play host to the renowned St. Petersburg Men's Quartet from Russia on May 13.

Dragan Macura from the church says the members of the quartet are accomplished vocalists who sing as soloists in various churches and also work as church choir conductors in the service of the Russian Orthodox Church. The principal goals of the members are to preserve the original traditions of the Russian vocal school and to show the continuity of liturgical music from early times to present day. They have joined together to tour California and share their music with an international audience.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a Vesper service, followed by a traditional Serbian dinner in the social hall at 7 p.m. for $10 per plate. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. Admission will be $5 at the door. The following day, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., the quartet will sing the choral responses to the ancient Divine Liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church during services in the chapel. At noon, everyone will be welcomed to a lunch in the social hall.
