Father, son say thanks a Bunch for motorcycle award

By Mary Ann Cook

INDIAN ARROW AIMS TO WIN: Father and son Ricky and Richard Bunch of Saratoga took a first place with their 1938 Indian Arrow Streamliner at the Legend of the Motorcycle: Concours d' Elegance International held at the Ritz Carlton in Half Moon Bay recently.

The category for their winning motorcycle was mid-century 1930-1957 competition/modified American class. They also won second for their 1934 Crocker Speedway race bike and a third in the early American category for their 1900 Orient Trike, the oldest known American motorcycle.

The Bunches have a vintage motorcycle collection that doesn't quit--a warehouse full--and were invited to show at the concourse by special invitation.

The event was the world premiere. Proceeds from the show benefited the Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Roots Initiative. As part of the doings, Bettina Chandler, widow of Otis Chandler, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. It was given in honor of her husband, publisher of the Los Angeles Times, whose motorcycle collection is hard to match, ranging from rare American motorcycles to unique and unusual European specimens.

Ricky, 20, is a student at West Valley College.

AWESOME ARCHITECT: Former Saratogan Richard Cutts Lundquist, a Los Angeles-based architect, is in rarefied company these days. His work was featured in the May issue of Town & Country. The magazine chose five top contenders for its Super-Sleek Structure recognition.

And Lundquist's building, ChoSun Galbee Restaurant in Los Angeles, was one of those selected. Other architects named were Richard Meier with a building in Rome, Toyo Ito in Tokyo, Foster & Partners in New York and Eric Miralles in Barcelona.

Lundquist is a graduate of Bellarmine and UC-Berkeley and took graduate courses at Architectural Associates, a foremost architectural school in London. His firm is named Studio RCL. He is married to Kelly Salloum, and they are in the process of adopting a baby from China.

His sister, Amy Gilson, is an attorney turned Realtor who lives in Denver, is married and the mother of 2-year-old twin boys. The impressive architect is the son of Harriet and George Lundquist, formerly of Saratoga, now living in Los Gatos.

VIOLIN SOLOIST: Ashley Lau, 17, a senior at Saratoga High School, will be a featured soloist at the California Youth Symphony's China tour preview on June 18, 2:30 p.m., at Spangenberg Theater in Palo Alto. Violinist Ashley is concertmaster of the symphony and is an award-winning musician.

This is a bon voyage concert because the CYS will tour China this summer for the first time--going to Beijing, Jiang Yin, Suzhou and Shanghai--presenting concerts over a two-week spread. Since most of the symphony members are of Chinese origin, the trip promises to be a memorable one, a visit to the family homeland.

Ashley was one of two winners of the CYS Young Artist Competition in 2004, and she has won half a dozen other competitions, including the command performance award from the California Music Teachers Association. She will play selections from Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole.

Also on the program are Shostakovich's Festive Overture, Copland's Rodeo and Stravinsky's The Firebird. Tickets at the door are $12, adults; $6, students. The CYS number is 650.325.6666.

HEALTH FAIR: The second annual Community Health Fair will be held June 3, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at the Saratoga Senior Center. Free screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, vision and heart will be offered, courtesy of the Lion Club Health Van. Information about nutrition, exercise and general body fitness will be available.

Health care practitioners will be on hand and lectures will include "All about Eyes" by Dr. Edward Saub and "Tai Chi, Fitness 'n Fun" by Cindy Teerlink. Free ice cream and coffee will be served. The number is 408.868.1257.

BASEBALL FUNDRAISER: Sunday Friends sponsors a Day with the San Jose Giants on June 17 at 5 p.m., a fundraiser to support programs for very low-income families in San Jose. Sunday Friends provides opportunities for children and their parents to earn the things they need, a working alternative to charity.

The game is at SJ Municipal Stadium, 588 E. Alma. Tickets are four for $25 and need to be purchased in advance from Friends' members. Otherwise the money goes to the Giants and walk-up fans pay $9 each. Prizes include passes to Disneyland and San Jose Grand Prix grandstand tickets.

KBAY 94.5 FM is the sponsor and Sam Van Zandt will throw out the first pitch. Michael Hobson is director of Sunday Friends.

PEDDLING VASONA: Low slung three-wheel cycles are for rent in Vasona Park on weekends now and daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day at $6.50 for half an hour, $10 an hour. Los Gatan Craig Cook owns the operation and offers Home and School Clubs or other nonprofit groups a chance to fundraise.

If an adult 18 or older takes over the operation for an afternoon, the organization will take home 40 percent of the proceeds. The number is 408.395.2408.
