The group's registrar can help prospective members trace their lineage. The local chapter is 75 years old, holds a yearly American history essay contest, participates in the Fourth of July celebration and donates time and money to various charities, including the Fisher House in Palo Alto. There families can live while their servicemen and women are being treated at the VA Hospital. The DAR focus is on patriotism, American history and children's education. There are 168,000 members in 3,000 chapters.

HISTORY: Saratoga Historical Foundation's latest exhibit celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Saratoga Rotary Club and the 30th anniversary of the two museum buildings in Historical Park on Highway 9. The long association of the Rotary with the SHF is commemorated in this exhibit.

Newly restored Sarah Brown art pieces are now hanging in the museum. Brown was a Saratoga resident, the daughter of abolitionist John Brown. The artwork includes portraits of her mother and father, John and Mary Brown, a landscape and a still-life.

Peggy Schoppe, Sheila Heid, Lyn Johnston and Jenni Taylor make up the exhibits committee, joined by Warren Heid for this exhibit. Heid is the Rotary historian and VP of the historical foundation. He coordinated the Rotary exhibit, while wife Sheila designed the museum section. Chuck Schoppe is president of the foundation.

UP NORTH: Vacationers venturing to Eureka this summer can see the recent art work of Saratogan Maryln Mori. Her paintings are being shown at the Humboldt State University First Street Gallery until Aug. 13. Hours are Tuesday-Sunday, noon-5 p.m.
