Men impersonating water company workers buglarize home in Saratoga
By Shannon Burkey
A man who claimed to be a San Jose Water Company employee robbed a Cox Avenue residence on Sept. 9, according to officials of the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department.
The man knocked on the door to the residence and told the woman who responded that he needed to check the home's water pressure.
Once let into the residence, the man distracted the woman by turning on faucets in the front of the house while a second man entered the house and took a 14-karat gold ring and several other items from the bedroom.
"This person was lucky; there was monetary loss, but sometimes people are assaulted," Cmdr. John Hirokawa said.
Hirokawa added this kind of con is not uncommon in the county, although he has not seen it happen in Saratoga for some time.
"Once in a while somebody will come to a door saying they are with the phone company or the PG&E, hoping people will let them into their homes," he said.
If residents are ever in doubt about who might be at their door, they are urged to ask for identification.
"All employees should have proper identification. If there is any doubt as to who they are, do not hesitate to ask for identification," Capt. Terry Calderone said.
