I complained bitterly that our local West Valley College was not in tune with the social structure of our community by not offering classes in Mandarin for those of us who would like to be much more understanding of Asian cultures. On receiving the 2007 schedule of classes for the winter and spring semesters, I was completely delighted to find "Basic Conversational Mandarin Chinese and Culture" given on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. by R. Xuan, starting on Jan. 30 with the fee at $20 per unit (3 units). That is remarkable.
UC Extension in Silicon Valley has also added the class to its list, with the discount package for levels I and II at $600 starting Jan. 10 in Cupertino.
I hope others will join me. We have so much to learn of our good neighbors.
