Alice Taylor Thomas
Alice Taylor Thomas died in her home at the Rogue Valley Manor in Medford, Ore., on Jan. 1. She was 94.
Thomas was a native of Watauga County in North Carolina and graduated from Appalachian College (Appalachian State University) in Boone, N.C. She taught school in North Carolina until her marriage to Col. Richard G. Thomas.
The couple lived in Huntsville, Ala., Fort Bliss, Texas, and Washington, D.C. while Col. Thomas served in the military. Upon his retirement, they moved to Carmel and later to Saratoga. They moved to the Rogue Valley Manor in 1984.
The Thomases were active in their effort to help underprivileged boys and girls obtain an education and established scholarships at North Carolina State University and Appalachian State University.
Their son, Richard Alan Thomas, died on Jan. 9, 1970, while serving in the Special Forces in Vietnam. Col. Thomas also died previously.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Alice Thomas' memory to any organization that serves children.
Charles 'Chuck' Sabes
Longtime Saratoga resident Charles "Chuck" Sabes died of a heart attack on Dec. 25 while on vacation with his family in San Jose, Costa Rica. He was 52.
Sabes graduated from UC-Berkeley and Santa Clara University Law School. He worked for the U.S. tax court in Washington, D.C., and then practiced law for many years in San Jose.
He married his college sweetheart, Robin, and the couple had five children in their 28-year marriage.
Sabes was an active member of the Saratoga High School Boosters Club and was instrumental in getting local schools' sports fields refurbished and the stadium lighting installed at the high school. He seldom missed any of his children's sports and school activities and coached many of their sports teams.
He believed in giving back to his community and did pro bono work for many charities, including the Pat Tillman Foundation. For many years, he would also turn the family's Saratoga home into a haunted house during Halloween for the community to enjoy, while raising money for the schools.
Along with his charity work and devotion to his family, Sabes was also an active member of Congregation Beth David, the Jewish Community Center and the Wexner Group.
Sabes is survived by his wife, Robin; daughters Ilana, Elisa, Rachel and Nicole; son, Michael; brother Mike Sabes and his wife Susan; brother Myron Sabes; sister Ruth Perkins; sister-in-law Alana Addison; brother-in-law Steve Addison; mother- and father-in-law Cookie and Arnie Addison; and many nieces and nephews. His parents, Irene and Irving Sabes, died previously.
Services were held Dec. 29 at Congregation Beth David and attended by more than 1,500 family members and friends. Donations may be made in his memory to Congregation Beth David in Saratoga, the Jewish Federation or the Addison-Penzak Jewish Community Center in Los Gatos.
