Obituaries

Fred O. Lovgren

Fred O. Lovgren of Corral de Tierra in Monterey County died on Jan. 6 with his family members at this side. He was 83.

Lovgren was born on May 16, 1923, in Pittsfield, Mass., the youngest son of Magnus and Augusta Lovgren, originally from Sweden.

He attended the University of Minnesota on a football scholarship and earned his bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, then began a 37-year career with Pacific Telephone and Telegraph. He retired in 1985 as a regional director for Central California.

Lovgren was a Rotarian, an avid golfer at Laguna Seca Golf Course and a sportsman. He enjoyed travel, and following his retirement he volunteered in the community.

His first wife, Ann, died in 1990. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Dolores Sanderock Lovgren of Salinas; his daughter Karen Brewer and her husband Michael of Maple Valley, Wash.; his son Richard Lovgren and his wife Sarah of Saratoga; and his grandchildren Eric Brewer of Washington, D.C., and Maren and Hayley Lovgren of Saratoga.

Private burial will take place in Saratoga. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation or to the donor's favorite charity.

Wayne A. Roberts

Wayne A. Roberts died on Dec. 25 at his home in Santa Cruz. He was 44.

Born Oct. 10, 1962, Roberts grew up in Saratoga and was a 1980 graduate of Saratoga High School. At 18, he had an off-road motorcycle accident at Pismo Beach and his injuries left him a quadriplegic, but he went on to live an independent life for 25 years.

He attended West Valley College, Cabrillo College and UC-Berkeley. He was scheduled to return to UC-Berkeley this month to study psychology.

Roberts' interests included designing high-tech wheelchairs and other devices to make life easier for the disabled, natural health remedies and foods, and training his three dogs, Arrow, Eubie and Moby.

He is survived by his father, Don Roberts and his wife Nadine of Saratoga; his mother, Blanca H. Jones and her husband Ed of Saratoga; his brothers, Marvin Roberts and his wife Leah of Thornton, Colo.; Gerald Roberts and his wife Laurie of South Lake Tahoe; Chuck Roberts and his wife Nadara of Saratoga; and many nieces and nephews.
