Carrasco, Yoo win two events each for Vikes in 5-way meet

Yareni Carrasco and Robin Yoo are running and jumping their way past the competition for the West Valley College track and field team this spring.

Carrasco and Yoo won two events each for the Vikings in a five-way meet in Modesto on Feb. 23.
Carrasco, a freshman, was the winner in women's 100-meter dash in 13:14 and the women's 200 in 27:31.
Yoo, also a freshman, won the men's long jump with a leap of 21-10. He also took the triple jump at 41-8.
Other men's winners for the Vikes were sophomore Nick Gancayco in the 200 in 22:41, freshman Ben Mullen in the 400 in 51:31, freshman Josh Hernandez in the 1,500 in 4:07.93 and freshman Jairus Taylor in the 110 hurdles in 16:52.
As for the other women, freshman Rheem Abuhamdeh won the 1,500 in 6:09.52, freshman Valerie Weilert the 5,000 in 19:21.96 and freshman Brianna Hagen the 400 hurdles in 70.15.
West Valley opened the year with a solid showing at the Coast Conference Preview meet.
Gancayco has already run under 11 seconds in the 100 meters at 10.98, ranking him third in the conference, and he's run the 200 meters in 22.07, which puts him on top of the list in both the conference and Northern California.
Carrasco is ranked second in both the 100 and 200 in the conference.
In the hurdles it's Mullen who shines for the Vikings with a 110 high hurdles time of 16.09 and a 57.20 in the 400 meter hurdles. Both times rank him second in the conference and fourth in NorCal.
Hagen has already bettered the time of last year's conference champ in the 400 meter hurdles in 70.07 and is also a member of both relay squads.
Josh Hernandez has already won two 1,500 meter races and posted a season best of 4:12. He now has the second best time in the conference. Ian Lujan also posted a strong early season mark in the 800 meters in 2:01.06.
Angel Gonzales ran strong times in the 3K in 9:28 and the 5K in 16:37.
Valerie Weilert finished second in the 3K once this season and took a win in the 1,500.
Yoo remains undefeated in his events, holding the best mark in Northern California in the long jump and seventh best in the triple jump.
Brittany Wise has the third best mark in the high jump with a 4-6 effort.
On March 2, West Valley will host a five-way meet that will begin at 2 p.m. against Fresno City, Chabot, Marin and De Anza.
