Warriors drop opener 41-7 to Lincoln
By Kevin Sparrer
Sometimes seasons start out a little slow, but luckily for Westmont it's still early in the year and there's a lot of football left to be played.
The Warriors, who play in the Santa Teresa Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, struggled against the strong offense and defense of Lincoln, a Mt. Hamilton Division squad.
The Warriors fell on Sept. 7 in their first preseason game, losing 41-7 to Lincoln with their only touchdown coming on a four-yard pass from junior quarterback Cannon Bernarding to senior Trevor Vlay at the end of the third quarter.
Westmont struggled on offense, gaining only 57 yards running the football. Bernarding completed less than half of his 31 passes. He connected with a receiver only 13 times but still managed to throw for 127 yards and the touchdown.
Vlay led the offense with five catches from Bernarding for 66 yards. He also carried the ball twice, but was unable to gain positive yardage.
Sophomore Chad Christopher led the ground attack for the Warriors, carrying the ball only three times for a total of 26 yards. Christopher also caught five passes from Bernarding for 32 yards.
Junior Scott Alves also had a part in the running game, carrying the ball five times for 23 yards.
Defensively the Warriors struggled a bit, allowing the six Lincoln scores, but Christopher led the defensive effort with six stops and Matt Bradley added five. Sophomore Domink Arbet had a pair of tackles as did seniors Shiloh Stephens and senior Robby Snyder.
