Lee leads young Falcons past Cupertino
By Dick Sparrer
Andrew Lee ran for two touchdowns and hauled in a 44-yard scoring pass from quarterback Vincent Carstens to lead the Saratoga frosh-soph football team to a lopsided 34-0 victory over Cupertino as the Falcons opened play in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
A six-yard touchdown run by Lee and a 38-yard TD dash by Brandon Shahmirza, along with the 44-yard TD toss from Carstens to Lee, helped the Falcons open up a 21-0 lead by intermission.
The offensive line of Kyle Keating, Bryce Dozier, Adam Oreglia, Connor Clarke and Kenny Kai handled the Pioneers up front as the Falcons were able to dominate the first two quarters.
It was more of the second in the second half. Lee scored on a 3-yard run and Jian Lee ran one in from 29 yards out to give the Falcons their margin of victory.
The defense was equally as impressive in the win. A pass interception by Chris Moran set up one Saratoga touchdown and Andy Berman, J. Lee, Nick Dere, Trevor Teerlink and Sawan Shah were defensive standouts.
A week earlier the Falcons had dropped a 41-7 non-league decision to rival Los Gatos. Highlights were few for Saratoga in the game, but Carstens scored his club's lone touchdown and A. Lee broke free for a 52-yard kickoff return.
Freshmen top Trojans
Kevin Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for one more to lead the Saratoga freshman team to a 30-0 victory over Milpitas.
Gregory Johnson got the Falcons on the board early with an eight-yard TD run, and Smith made it 14-0 by the half with a 10-yard scoring toss to Chris Guengerich.
Smith found Tim Lycurgus behind the defense with a 50-yard touchdown pass and, after Alex Polcyn was credited with a safety, Smith ran 21 yards for the final score.
Rick Wilson converted on four extra point kicks to round out the scoring for Saratoga.
