Lecture series kicking off with talk on 'Kosher sex'
Rabbi Shmuel "Shmuley" Boteach opens another season of the Distinguished Lecture Series of the South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning on Jan. 11, at 7:30 p.m. with a topic "Kosher Sex: What Makes Sex Jewish?" The program takes place at Congregation Beth David, 19700 Prospect Road, Saratoga.
Boteach has written 11 books, including Kosher Sex and Dating Secrets of the 10 Commandments, and has had his writings featured in diverse periodicals, ranging from the Times of London to Playboy. He has also appeared on many TV and radio programs, including "The Today Show," "Inside Edition," "Good Morning America," "Entertainment Tonight" and "The Howard Stern Show."
While serving for 11 years as a Rabbi at Oxford University, Boteach founded the L'Chaim Society, a Jewish education organization that hosts world figures and statespeople who lecture on values-based leadership. A native of Los Angeles, Boteach lives in New York with his wife Debbie and their six children. He lectures around the world on contemporary issues and writes weekly essays that are published on the Internet.
Next in the lecture series is "An Evening with Author Faye Kellerman" on Feb. 8. Following this is "Too Jewish? Challenging Traditional Identities" on March 14; the program is hosted by artist and curator Ken Aptekar, who also offers a slide show. The current series closes with "Can Israel Be Both Jewish and Democratic?" by Rabbi Uri Regev of Israel's Religious Action Center.
Series tickets are $120 per person for preferred seating, $70 per person for general admission, $50 for senior citizens and $30 for patrons 30 and younger. Individual lecture tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for 30 or younger. An additional $5 fee will be charged for tickets purchased at the door. This is the seventh year the Distinguished Lecture Series is presented by the South Bay Institute for Jewish Living and Learning with support from the Hebrew Free Loan Association and Silicon Valley Community Newspapers. The Institute is a committee representing San Jose-area Jewish organizations that provides a community structure for adult Jewish education.
