Kay Jackson, Kristie Barnes and Jenny Miller combined for 79 points in two games, but the De Anza Community College women's basketball team could manage just a split in the first two games of the De Anza Classic.
Jackson pumped in five three-pointers on her way to a 17-point night in a 72-44 win over Modesto to open the tournament. Barnes supported with 14 points and Miller added 12. Both of them hit a pair of threes.
Aisha Sullivan joined the three in double digits with 11 points. Kerri Reese, Kam Simpson and Leslie Brown had four each and Iisha Coleman, Selena Miller and Lori Alvarez all had two.
Jackson came back with 13 points and Barnes had 12, but the Dons dropped a 65-60 decision to Sierra College. Miller supported with 11 points. Jackson buried three three-pointers, Miller hit two and Barnes popped one.
Donalyn Marchi contributed seven points to the cause, Reese and Coleman had six apiece and Sullivan added five.
The Dons, now 9-8 for the year following the split, had opened the week with a 77-60 conference win over Ohlone.
J. Miller, a former Prospect star, poured in 25 points, including three three-pointers, to lead the Dons to the victory. Reese supported with 13 points and Sullivan joined the pair in twin numbers with 10.
Marchi and Jackson pumped in eight points apiece. Barnes hit a three-pointer and S. Miller and Alvarez also had three each. Alvarez is another former Prospect standout.
The Dons, 2-0 in conference play, visit San Jose City College on Jan. 3, 7 p.m., before hosting the City College of San Francisco Jan. 5, 7 p.m.
De Anza men fall
Chris Shoemaker fired in 16 points to top a list of five Dons in twin figures, but the De Anza men's basketball team dropped a tough 91-76 nonconference decision to Cañada.
Matt Kelly banked in 11 points and Scott Beamish, Harold Bordenave and Lance Fastusi dropped 10 each in the loss. Kelly and Beamish each hit a pair of three-pointers for the Dons. Beamish, like Miller, is a former Prospect star.
Nick Glover added seven points for De Anza. Jebraun Jones had four, Nolan Steverson and Mario Baca three apiece and Steve Hom two.
The Dons slipped to 3-12 with the loss. They'll host Five Star on Jan. 4 and Cal Club on Jan. 6 in a couple of 7 p.m. games before opening the Golden Gate Conference season Jan. 12 at Chabot.
