Holiday DUI arrests

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety officers arrested 122 drivers while doing their part in the 18-day Avoid the 13 campaign against drunken drivers. A total of 920 arrests were made in Santa Clara County. Last year, Sunnyvale officers made 69 of the 711 arrests in the county.

Only the San Jose Police Department and the San Jose California Highway Patrol made more arrests.

There were no deaths during the 1995-96 campaign--the third time in 22 years that fatalities were avoided. Jan Ford, public relations director for Avoid the 13, said the county had the lowest injury rate since the program began, with 33 crashes. Last year, 43 injury accidents occurred in the county.

Sunnyvale's top officers include George McCloskey, with 13 arrests; Dayton Pang, with 11; Todd Hern, 10; Rich Patel, 9; Kim Bianconi, 9; Mike Ditallo, 9; Jim Woida, 8; Basim Abu-Hamid, 7; and Mario Moreno, 7.

Correction

In the Dec. 27 Sun, some facts about post-holiday recycling were inaccurate. Below is the correct information.

The SMaRT Recycling Center at 301 Carl Road in Sunnyvale accepts cardboard boxes and non-foil wrapping paper seven days a week, 8am-5pm. Specialty Solid Waste & Recycling will take trees during its weekly pickups at single-family residences, duplexes, triplexes and mobile homes Jan. 2-19.

All residents and businesses may drop off unflocked, undecorated trees Jan. 6 and 7, 10 a.m to 3:30 p.m. at Sunnyvale Recycling Center, 1444 Borregas Ave., or Sunnyvale Nursery, 1485 Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road. Trees must be cut in 4-foot pieces. Call 730-7262 for details.
