Thanks to the generosity of Sunnyvale residents, ODB fed the hungry once again

At Our Daily Bread, Sunnyvale's hot meals program for the hungry, reports came in from other agencies throughout the Bay Area. This holiday season, giving was down. We seemed to experience it ourselves. Just five days before Christmas, though our menu called for ham with raisin sauce and all the trimmings, we had but a single ham. The word went out through our volunteers and friends and the local media, including The Sun. By the time we served our Christmas meal we had 380 pounds of premium ham and another 100 pounds of canned ham in reserve. We had a marvelous Christmas at ODB, filled with the spirit of sharing.

There are many people we have to thank, more than I could list. Among them are the children of the Sunnyvale Christian School, who earned the money and purchased and wrapped the gifts we gave to the children at ODB. There are the employees of Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space, who sponsored the toiletry packs we gave to more than 250 diners, and our volunteers who assembled them. There's our program coordinator, Carla Jebian, and our outstanding staff of volunteer cooks, servers, buyers, table setters and dish- washers.

But mostly we want to thank the many people who responded to the need at ODB and showed again that Sunnyvale is a city with a heart. They demonstrated that God works in us and through us to respond to a needy world.

I should add that ODB serves on more than Christmas--we serve three hot meals every week, all year round, and we've done it since 1983. Please remember us in the spring and summer as you have in the winter. And understand that as our overhead is paid by St. Thomas Episcopal Church and we have only one part-time employee, your contribution will go directly to feed the hungry. ODB accepts contributions in cash or checks. ODB also accepts commercially prepared, canned or packaged foods, turkeys, hams and homegrown fruits or vegetables, in accordance with health regulations. No. 10 size cans are especially useful. Deliver goods to the church at 231 S. Sunset Ave., Sunnyvale, on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning, or call 736-4108 for an appointment.

We always need volunteers to prepare, cook, serve or clean. Most work one day a week for two to four hours, and no experience is necessary (at this time we especially need help on Wednesdays). Contact Carla Jebian at the number above.

Thank you for being part of Our Daily Bread.
