Sunnyvale cops arrest 102 for drunken driving
As part of a countywide effort to reduce drunken driving, the Suunyvale Public Safety Department arrested 102 people for driving under the influence between Dec. 13 and Jan. 1.
Although the number of arrests was down slightly from 122 last year, Sunnyvale law enforcement officials characterize the latest crackdown as a success.
Police reported no fatalities and only one injury accident related to the arrests.
"You can call it a success...the fact that no one was killed in this city," said officer Tom Hoppin, a spokesman for the department.
The department undertaking was part of a countywide drunken-driving crackdown known as "Avoid the 13."
Seventeen agencies throughout Santa Clara County participated in the project. Overall, 1,137 people were arrested over the 20-day period, marking a 5 percent increase from last year.
City names Walker interim parks chief
Sunnyvale Parks Superintendent Robert Walker has been named interim director of the Parks and Recreation Department while the city of Sunnyvale conducts a search for a long-term appointment.
Walker, who fills a vacancy left by the death of John Christian, has headed the Sunnyvale Parks Division since 1988.
He was responsible for the operation, maintenance and improvements related to more than 500 acres of open space and nearly 50 parks, school sites and other recreational facilities under the care of the division.
Water district rep retires after 37 years
Santa Clara Valley Water District board director James John Lenihan retired Dec. 31 after serving 37 consecutive years on the water board. Lenihan represented District 5--which encompasses Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Palo Alto--while on the board. Lenihan also served on the California Water Commission and the Governor's Central Valley Project Advisory Committee and was a member of the Strategic Planning Committee of the Association of California Water Agencies. The Santa Clara Valley Water District Board named the dam at Lexington Reservoir, near Los Gatos, in his honor.
