Vice mayor elected to league of cities office

    By Jana Seshadri

Sunnyvale Vice Mayor Julia Miller was recently elected second vice president to the Peninsula Division of the League of California Cities at the league's annual conference last month in Sacramento. Miller has served four years as a Sunnyvale representative to the Peninsula Division, which is comprised of the cities within Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties and the city of San Francisco. It's one of the league's 16 regional divisions.

"I'm pretty excited about it," Miller said, adding that she was elected by a roll-call vote while running against San Jose City Council member Pat Dando.

The league is the cities' own organization, which breaks up the state of California into 16 regional divisions. city officials work together through the league to further the common interests of their cities and citizens. The annual conference provides an opportunity for all California city representatives to get together, exchange ideas, offer support to one another and combine resources so they can influence policy decisions that affect cities.

Miller said the regional officers are usually elected to equally represent all counties in their division and have quarterly meetings to discuss issues and legislation relating to various policies. Francis LaPoll, from the city of Los Altos, is currently president of the Peninsula Division. As second vice president, Miller said her responsibility is to support the president by being communications officer for LaPoll and their team. This would entail communicating with the division members, gathering data and information from those who attend policy meetings at the state level, and keeping the president informed of all happenings.

The divisions participate in the development of league policies and services by expressing recommendations of the regional divisions. The divisions also look at legislation covering issues that would interest the cities and municipal governments.

Miller also represented Sunnyvale and the Peninsula Division at the policy meeting for Employee Relations during the league's convention. During the meeting, members looked into legislation that affects employees, including labor relations, workers compensation and disability benefits.

"I am honored to represent Sunnyvale as an officer on this regional division of the league," Miller said in her statement. "It is important to have a voice at the state level on discussions that impact the quality of life in our community."
