SJ Giants need homes; Spartans host dinner

    By Dick Sparrer

Signing a professional baseball contract is an exciting experience for any young man. But the early years of his career can be difficult and lonely.

Many of the players--most of them in their late teens and early 20s--find themselves away from home for the first time.

That's why the San Jose Giants, a Class A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, looks for local families to take in their players each season.

The search is currently on for host families for the 2002 season that runs April through August. Linda Pereira of the Giants needs to find enough families for the players by early March.

Host families provide a player with a room, and the Giants provide season tickets and parking passes for all of the club's games at San Jose Municipal Stadium. The team also hosts picnics for the families and sponsors an annual trip to a San Francisco Giants game at Pac Bell Park.

"It's really a great program," said Pereira.

For more information on the host family program, call Pereira at 408.297.1435, ext. 19.

    Spartan baseball dinner

Dave Righetti will be the guest speaker on Jan. 18, 6-9 p.m., when the San Jose State University baseball team hosts its "First Pitch Dinner" at The Three Flames Restaurant, 1547 Meridian in San Jose.

Righetti, the former Pioneer and San Jose City College star who went on to play for the New York Yankees and other big-league clubs, is currently the pitching coach for the San Francisco Giants.

Along with the guest speaker, the night will also provide an opportunity to meet the 2002 Spartans and there will be information on the coming season, the booster club and season tickets.

The cost of the dinner is $35 and the reservation deadline is Jan. 11. For more information, call 408.924.1467.
