Youth is arrested for recent burglary spree

Juvenile suspected in seven local burglaries, auto and mail thefts

    By Daniel Hindin

Just days before Christmas, Sunnyvale police arrested a juvenile for a string of burglaries in south Sunnyvale. They suspect the juvenile of mail theft, seven burglaries and one auto theft.

Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety spokesman Capt. Chuck Eaneff reports, "He's taken all sorts of things ranging from small things to cars."

Eaneff says that, as usual, the crime rates rose during the holiday season.

"We're having a bunch of burglaries on the south side," Eaneff says. "In the past, we've had a lot of burglaries of Asian houses during this season. Burglars looked up names in the phone book or looked for shoes outside the door. But this year, they aren't targeting one racial group over another."

Authorities say criminals in the past targeted Asian homes because they believe many Asian families don't use banks. The possibility of finding large sums of money or other valuables in these households rises considerably.

"People have to be aware during the holiday season because of all of the gifts and other things that they have in their houses," Eaneff says. "They need to report anything suspicious."

Eaneff reports the juvenile is being processed with the district attorney's office.
