Scios Nova expands Sunnyvale facility, creates 15 biotech jobs

Scios Nova Inc., one of more than 35 biotech companies in Sunnyvale, has announced that it will expand its Sunnyvale research facilities to accommodate the growth of the company's research and development staff. The expansion brings 60 scientists to the area, 15 of whom will fill new jobs, reports Anne Bowdidge, Scios Nova's investment relations spokesperson.

Located on Maude Avenue, Scios Nova will add 27,000 square feet to its13,500-square-foot laboratory and office space. Richard L. Casey, the company's chairman and executive officer, announced that construction will begin during the first quarter of 1996.

The company has a 90,000-square-foot laboratory and office space in Mountain View and employs 300 people in total.

According to Bowdidge, revenues for the company's 1994 fiscal year, which ended Dec. 31, were reported at $53.6 million. Scios Nova also experienced a net loss of $27.9 million during that period, though Bowdidge asserts that the company has operations that continue to bring in money. The 1995 financial figures are still unavailable.

Scios Nova, a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery, development and commercialization of novel human therapeutics, specializes on research and development on acute illnesses, primarily in the area of cardio-renal disease.
