Working hard for a new contract

The City and its biggest union, the Sunnyvale Employees Association, held a marathon talk last Tuesday, trying to reach a contact agreement. The sides have been without one since last July.

Union President Ben Gikis said the meeting began at 10 a.m. and went on "well past midnight."

Neither party would comment on the details of the discussion, which were held in the presence of a mediator.

Gikis said both sides are trying to reach an agreement before February 28--the day the parties are set to move to arbitration.

"There's either going to be an agreement or the arbitration moves forward," Gikis said.

Thursday, city council and staff held a closed-door session to discuss matters related to the SEA problem. On the same night, the union held a meeting to discuss the city's most recent proposal.

A reckless way to begin Y2K

It's no way to begin a millennium. January 1, Rodolfo Jaimes, an 18-year old Sunnyvale resident, allegedly led Palo Alto Police on a 4.3 mile chase that ended with a collision into a building at 1717 Embarcadero. Erin Nordby, with the Deputy Attorney's Office, says police were responding to 911 calls that Jaimes's vehicle was traveling the wrong direction down Middlefield Avenue when they tried to pull him over. Nordby says Jaimes is being charged with a DUI and felony reckless driving while evading a police officer.
