Report shows rental availability increased since the summer

Sunnyvale's Housing Division presented a report to the City Council last week stating that during December, Sunnyvale's apartment complex vacancy rate for December was .94 percent.

Also, the report states, there was only one mobile home available to rent in 12 mobile home parks in Sunnyvale.

Each year, the Housing Division staff conducts two surveys to determine vacancy rates for the city. A city ordinance states that in order to convert apartments to condominiums, the rate must remain above 3 percent for at least a year.

The Housing Division calculated the percentage after surveying 106 apartment complexes in Sunnyvale--about 50 percent of the city's rental stock.

According to the report, out of 13,402 units, only 126 were vacant.

This percentage is higher that June's, when the city had a .58 percent vacancy rate.

The report also lists rental rates around the city. The average rent for a two bedroom apartment in Sunnyvale is $1,410.

City Council meetings start a half-hour earlier

Civic-minded residents who like to keep tabs on the City Council will have to leave their homes earlier for the Tuesday night meetings.

Starting with its Jan. 13 session, the Sunnyvale City Council will begin its regular meetings at 7:30 p.m., half an hour earlier than the normal 8 p.m. start time. This is a big change for the council, which has been meeting at the same time for the past 30 years.

Earlier this month, the city clerk's office conducted a survey of cities in Santa Clara County that showed the Sunnyvale City Council meetings had the latest start time. Other city councils begin between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The council decided to move up the starting time to make it easier for the public to attend its regular meetings and also hoped to end the meetings a little sooner, the city clerk's office said.
