Who could blame Miguel Castillo if he hit up Fremont Principal April Scott for a little overtime pay last week?
After all, the Fremont boys basketball coach and his players certainly turned in the extra time in games in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
But no doubt Castillo will forgo the extra pay... the results of two games against Lynbrook and Los Gatos were certainly payment enough.
The Firebirds topped Lynbrook 48-44 in overtime on Tuesday, then backed that up with a hard-earned 48-46 win over Los Gatos on Thursday night.
The two wins helped the 'Birds improve to 4-0 in the division as they face a league bye this week. Fremont returns to the floor on Jan. 18, taking on league favorite Milpitas in a 7:30 p.m. game in Sunnyvale.
The week started with the OT win over the Vikings. Fremont and Lynbrook battled to a 40-40 tie through regulation, then the Firebirds topped the Vikes 8-4 in the extra period to clinch the win.
Troy Tulowitzki poured in 21 points to lead Fremont to the victory. The senior sharp-shooter had two three-pointers among his eight field goals, and he added three points at the free-throw line.
Jesse Enchill pitched in 11 points and Travis Harris hit 10 to join Tulowitzki in double figures. Tyler Duran added four points in the win and Matt Phelps hit two.
Fremont, 17-13 for the year, rebounded with a two-point win over Los Gatos later in the week on the LG floor.
Tulowitzki was the scoring leader for Fremont in this one, too. The senior, who was the co-most valuable player for the league champion Firebirds in the El Camino Division last winter, led his club with 14 points, including a couple of three-pointers.
Jacob Esau tossed in 10 points for the Firebirds. Phelps added eight. Enchill and Harris canned five apiece and Delainy Durgin had four. Enchill hit a three for Fremont.
Wrestling
Junior Bayardo Sanchez pinned in a quick 31 seconds at 140 pounds to lead the Fremont wrestling team to a 48-25 non-league win over Overfelt last week.
Sanchez topped a list of nine Fremont winners in the match. Six of those victories came by fall.
Chris Osian pinned at 119 pounds for the Firebirds, and Alvin Cacdac won by fall at 135. Rick Trevino pinned in the first round at 160 pounds, and Mike Silva (145) and Daniel Atondo (171) each won on second round falls.
Luke Tran cruised to a 9-4 victory at 152 pounds and Ernest Ancona won 11-2 at 189. Amantha Hordagoda won by forfeit at 103.
The Firebirds will return to De Anza competition this week when they take on Lynbrook in a league match.
Kovacs, Hess are All-Americans
Jacob Kovacs and Tracy Hess of De Anza Community College were each named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas Junior College All-America team.
Kovacs, a sophomore defender, earned a place on the men's Division III All-America squad, and Hess, a sophomore forward, was named to the women's Division III All-America roster.
Hess, a former Fremont star, knocked in 34 goals and dished off 10 assists for the Dons this past fall.
Sunnyvale's Garces skates to second
Jacquelyn Garces, an 11-year-old from Sunnyvale, finished second at the Central Pacific Regional figure skating competition in Oakland to earn a berth in the United States Junior Figure Skating Championships that were held last month in Chicago, Ill.
Garces was one of just 36 skaters to qualify for the nationals in the juvenile girls division.
Only the top four finishers in the division at the Central Pacific Regionals earned a national spot. There were skaters in the Oakland competition from Northern California, Hawaii, Utah and Nevada.
