Commission holds forum on spending Prop. 10 money

Thousands of dollars have been allocated to six different regions in Santa Clara County from funds approved from Proposition 10, the 50-cents-a-pack state tax on tobacco, for local communities to spend on improving child development between birth and age 5. The Children and Families First Commission of Santa Clara County is sponsoring a community meeting for residents in the North Region, which includes Sunnyvale, on Jan. 17. The commission hopes the meeting will help form a partnership to advise the steering committee on how these funds can meet the needs of pre-natal to 5-year-old children. The public is invited to attend. Food and childcare will be provided at the meeting.

The meeting will be held at the Cubberly Community Center located at 4000 Middlefield Road, meeting room A3, Palo Alto, CA 94303, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17. For more information, contact regional coordinator Katherine Noller-Fernandez at 408.534.0817 or steering committee member Debra Petersen at 408.297.3295, ext. 247.

The torch began its cross-country journey on Dec. 4, 2001, in Georgia. After 33 days on the road and traveling coast to coast, the torch will pass through California on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah, in time for the opening ceremonies of the games.

Public safety officer involved in Oakland brawl

During an Oakland Raiders home game on Dec. 30, an off-duty lieutenant with the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department was involved in a physical altercation with security guards outside the Coliseum's Westside Club. According to Capt. Byron Pipkin, the ensuing brawl, which was caused by miscommunication concerning a drink the lieutenant was carrying outside in the club, resulted in the lieutenant having his finger severely bitten.

"We were in contact with the Oakland Police Department and are satisfied with their investigation," Pipkin said. "They are not going to take this case further."

Pipkin said statements were taken but no arrests were made. Pipkin said he could not reveal the name of the lieutenant but said that the officer is still with the Sunnyvale Police Department.
