Public Safety
The following incidents were compiled from the log at the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department.
Embezzlement--Jan. 8, 1 p.m., 900 block of W. Fremont Avenue. The suspect, an employee of a clinic at the above location, began taking checks and cash from the day's deposits and altering the ledger to mask the thefts. The thefts came to the attention of the employer around Oct. 2, 2001. The total loss to this point exceeds $69,000 and is expected to go much higher. The suspect met with her employer and paid back more than $21,000. The employee indicated that she had not stolen any other money.
Commercial Burglary--Jan. 8, 8:14 a.m., 500 block of E. Remington Drive. An unknown suspect broke into the theater at the above location. The suspect pried open an internal door and gained access to the safe. The suspect stole $200 from the safe.
Petty Theft--Jan. 8, 4:10 p.m., 300 block of S. Sunnyvale Avenue. Officer responded to a department store's report of a petty theft. Upon arrival security advised the officer that the suspect concealed clothing in her bag. She was stopped outside the store after failing to pay for the clothing. She was placed under arrest by security. The officer determined that a theft had occurred, and cited and released her from the scene.
Auto Burglary--Jan. 2, 2 p.m., 1000 block of Morse Avenue. Between 1 p.m. on Dec. 30 and 7 p.m. on Jan. 1 unknown suspect(s) took items from the victim's car without victim's knowledge or permission. The victim left his vehicle and when he returned, it was still locked from the outside but the inside was in disarray. Taken from the vehicle were a PalmPilot worth $200, a two-way pager worth $50 and a CD worth $10.
Possession of Controlled Substance--Jan. 1, 7:09 p.m., 700 block of S. Fair Oaks Avenue. An officer responded to reports of a suspect who was drunk in public. The suspect was contacted and arrested. Suspect also had methamphetamine in his pocket. Suspect was arrested and transferred to Santa Clara County Jail.
Possession of Controlled Substance--Jan. 1, on view at 9:16 p.m., Intersection of Fair Oaks Avenue and Caliente Drive. Officer stopped a vehicle for expired registration. Both driver and passenger were suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Both driver and passenger were booked and transported to county jail.
Illegal Entry--Jan. 2, 9:32 a.m., 500 block of Central. Between 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 27, 2001, and 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2002, unknown suspect(s) damaged locks and the door of a shed located to the rear of the school at the above location. Suspect(s) made entry and then left the shed. Nothing was taken.
Burglary, Retail--Dec. 31, 6:40 p.m., 1600 block of Hollenbeck Avenue. Loss prevention officers of a grocery store at the above location witnessed a suspect conceal a bottle of rum in his jacket and then walk out of the store without paying for it.
