Local suspect, 21, arrested in recent roadway beating
Allegedly fractured skull of Sunnyvale native, 43
By Daniel Hindin
Sunnyvale police arrested 21-year-old Cupertino resident Minh Luong Phan without incident for the Dec. 2, 2000 beating of a 43-year-old Sunnyvale resident. The incident left the victim in the hospital for weeks with a severe skull fracture.
Police originally responded to the area of Lawrence Expressway and Tasman Drive on Dec. 2, after receiving a report of a man down at 3:38 p.m.
Witnesses reported that the victim and two males in their 20s left their cars and got into an argument. They said the two younger men beat the victim and left him sprawled in the street behind his car before speeding away eastbound on Tasman Drive in a small, green car--possibly a Geo.
Authorities took the victim to the Valley Medical Center where he remained in critical condition.
"The victim is still recovering; it was touch and go for a while there. He experienced a skull fracture and other critical injuries as a result of a metal object to the head," explained Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety spokesman Capt. Chuck Eaneff.
According to Eaneff, police found Phan at his San Jose business and arrested him for assault with a deadly weapon.
"Detective Mark Sole really did an excellent job on a traditional investigation," Eaneff says.
He adds the investigation continues and additional arrests are possible.
