Tulowitzski leads Fremont to wins
Baza outstanding middleweight at Bianchini Memorial
By Dick Sparrer
Things don't get much better than they were last week for the Fremont boys basketball team.
The Firebirds won big, and they won close--but the bottom line is that they won twice to push their record to 4-0 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Troy Tulowitzski poured in 22 points to lead the Firebirds to a lopsided 72-49 win over Los Altos to open the week, then he came back with 23 points in a tight 45-40 win over Homestead on Friday night.
It was Tulowitzski's hot hand that helped the 'Birds pull out the five-point win over the Mustangs.
Fremont trailed 23-21 at the half, but outscored Homestead 15-11 in the third to take a two-point lead, then topped the Mustangs 9-6 in the fourth to win by five.
Tulowitzski had three three-point buckets among his nine field goals on his way to the 23-point night.
Jesse Enchill and Glenn Marasigan had six points each and Dominik Stewart hit four. Marasigan and Stewart each popped a three. Jacob Esau, Ryan Castro and David Fernandez added two points each in the win.
Brad Sasaki was the top scorer for the Mustangs, tossing in 10 points, including two threes. John McGaughlin added eight points, Taylor Carpenter and Garren Strong six apiece, Ramont Thomas and Randy Chang four each and Steve Vanderet two.
Tulowitzski buried four three-pointers on his way to 22 points in the easy win over the Eagles to open the week.
Castro finished in double digits with 14 points, including a three, and Enchill popped 12 points. Esau added nine points and Stewart hit seven.
Homestead lost a tough 52-49 overtime decision to Lynbrook the same night, despite an 18-point effort by Sasaki. Strong supported with 15 points for the Mustangs, Carpenter hit 11 and McGaughlin had four.
Knights fall
The King's Academy boys lost twice in the Private Schools League last week, falling 57-36 to Sacred Heart Prep and 47-36 to Redwood Christian.
Junior Brent Mitchell canned 16 points, including a couple of threes, to lead the Knights against SH. Aaron Scott supported with seven points, Alex Ziegler had six, Bill Dunaway five and David Flory two.
Ziegler came back with 10 points, but the Knights lost by 11 to Redwood Christian. Scott chipped in with eight points, Mitchell hit seven, Dunaway and Eugene Kim had five apiece and Flory hit one.
Baza is best
Fremont's Anthony Baza won an individual title at the 16th annual Gary Bianchini Memorial Wrestling Tournament at Cupertino High.
But Baza was more than just a champion at the Bianchini--he was named the outstanding wrestler in the middle weights.
It was the second straight Bianchini crown for the senior. Baza, who was third at 135 pounds in the 1999 Bianchini Memorial, won a title at 140 pounds in 2000 and backed that up with a championship performance at 145 pounds this year.
Baza was one of three Fremont placers at the rugged Bianchini. Senior Chris Osian was second at 112 pounds and junior Alvin Cacdac finished sixth at 130 pounds.
Baza and Osian, both returning state qualifiers for the Firebirds this year, had each placed at the tough Sierra Nevada Classic held in Reno in late December. Baza was fourth at 145 pounds and Osian finished seventh at 112.
The Firebirds will return to action in the tough De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this week when they visit Palo Alto on Jan. 18, 6:30 p.m.
Lady Birds lose
Amy Telles knocked in a second-half goal off an assist from Yajaira Gutierrez, but the Fremont girls soccer team dropped a 6-1 decision to Santa Clara in El Camino Division play.
Fremont, 0-6 in the division and 3-7 for the year, had lost 4-0 to Wilcox earlier in the week.
