    Tough start for Lady Birds

    Homestead girls fall to Lancers

    By Dick Sparrer

A promising season has taken a dismal turn for the girls basketball team at Fremont High School.

The Firebirds opened the season with 11 wins in 12 nonleague games, and entered play in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with high hopes and great expectations.

But Fremont is off to a dismal 0-3 start in league play, not at all what head coach Jason Crutchfield had expected this winter.

Still, the Lady Birds coach is hoping that his club will end this short detour and get back on the winning road.

Fremont slipped to 0-3 last week after losing a tough 42-38 decision to Santa Clara. The Firebirds were up 31-28 heading into the final period, but they were outscored 14-7 by the Bruins.

Monique Gammon popped 10 points to lead all Fremont scorers in the game. Josie Wells added nine points, Daynelle Parker hit seven, Shade Akanbi six, Katrina Ison four and Kristen Kam two.

Homestead lost a tough De Anza decision the same night, falling 51-43 to St. Francis in a battle of two unbeaten teams. The Mustangs slipped to 2-1 in league and to 9-5 for the year with the loss.

Julia Randall tossed in 12 points to lead all Homestead scorers in the game and Vickie Chiang and Marie Levey hit 11 apiece. Tanya Green added four points, Carolyn Whiteman three and Stephanie Malcolm two.

The Lancers were just up by three at 39-36 heading into the final period before outscoring Homestead 51-43 to win by eight.

    'Birds win, Mustangs lose

The Fremont boys cruised to a low-scoring 37-25 win over Mountain View last week while Homestead dropped a 65-37 decision to Saratoga in a pair of El Camino Division games.

Devin Scott buried 13 points to lead the Firebirds to their first league win. Fremont is 1-2 in the division and 10-8 for the year.

Renato Carlos had a three among his seven points. Jesse Enchill had six points, Jacob Esau five, Cameron McNeil four and Dominik Stewart two.

Robbie Hoffman bombed three three-pointers to finish with nine points, but the Mustangs lost a 65-37 decision to the Falcons.

John McLaughlin had eight points, Garren Strong seven, Ramont Thomas six, Do Kim three and Randy Chang two.

The Mustangs slipped to 1-2 in the division and to 4-12 for the year.

    Firebirds pin win

Four pins helped the Fremont wrestling team cruise to an easy 38-24 win over Los Altos in De Anza Division dual match action last week.

The Firebirds, who will face Wilcox this week before meeting unbeaten Monta Vista in a key match on Jan. 27, improved to 2-1 in the division with the win.

Arturo Galano, Anthony Baza, Leo Saenz and Mike Deguara each won by fall for the Firebirds against the Eagles.

Galano pinned with two seconds remaining in the first round at 119 pounds for Fremont, and Baza nailed his fall with just 37 seconds left to wrestle at 140.

Saenz recorded a quick 57-second pin at 171 pounds, and Deguara pinned at 1:29 of the first round at 189.

Gilbert Osian notched a 7-3 decision win at 112 for the Firebirds, and Steven Knight at 125 and Bobby Sanchez at 135 each posted 4-2 decision wins.

Chris Healy came through with a 4-0 victory at 145 pounds and Gilbert Sanchez won 6-3 at 152.

    Knights win

Jarod Monroe tossed in 27 points in two games and Ryan Hazley added 26 to lead the King's Academy boys basketball team to a pair of wins in the Private Schools League last week.

Monroe buried 17 points to lead King's past Woodside Priory 54-48. Brian Zollweg added 16 points in the win and Hazley hit 11, Alex Ziegler six and David Flory and Aaron Scott two apiece.

Hazley came back with 15 points and Monroe and Bill Dunaway drilled 10 each in a 53-42 win over Pinewood. Ziegler added seven points, Scott and Flory four apiece and Zollweg three.

The Knights are now 2-2 in league play and 8-8 for the year.

The King's girls, meanwhile, lost 49-42 to Mercy-Burlingame before edging ICA 68-67. The Knights are 1-2 in league and 8-9 overall.
