Speak Out
Kudos to paraders, Chamber of Commerce
Thank you for your coverage of the Sunnyvale parade. And a loud round of applause and kudos to the Chamber of Commerce and the Celebrate Sunnyale 2000 committee for organizing this event.
We had 60 Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts marching in the Parade. They were cheered on by the crowd on every corner, after every song, and each of their waves was matched by one from the crowd. What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning.
Many of those girls experienced that morning what it means to be part of a community as they recognized people they knew from school, church and other activites who were either in the parade on watching on the sidewalk. They were excited to be one of the many groups of people in the parade, and realized that they all had at least one thing in common that day - they were in a Parade.
Bringing the community together for a celebration of the year 2000 is a lofty goal. At the parade on Saturday both onlookers and participants agreed that there is a sense of community alive in Sunnyvale; a "hometown pride." Lets add this parade to the list of many events in our community--whether sponsored by the Recreation Department, the Chamber of Commerce, service clubs or others--and build on that hometown pride. We are fortunate to live in a richly diverse community, and events like this parade are a wonderful avenue to share that diversity.
