By Dick Sparrer
Fremont held a comfortable lead.
The Firebirds were up 10 points; they had outscored Homestead in each of the first three periods. They just had to hold that lead to claim their second win of the young season in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
And that's just what they did. The Firebirds held their lead to pull out the win. But it was anything but comfortable.
Homestead made Fremont uncomfortable by outscoring the Firebirds 15-7 in the final period, but the 'Birds were able to hold on for a thrilling 37-35 victory over the rival Mustangs.
Darren Lang pumped in 13 points and Melvin Rabena buried a pair of three-pointers on his way to seven points to lead Fremont to the exciting win.
Michael Harris supported with five points, Reynold Carlos and Thai Kim hit four points apiece, and Mark Harvey and Michael Hardwick had two each.
Fremont jumped in front 10-6 in the first period and led by five at the half, 19-14. The Firebirds outscored the Mustangs by five in the third to lead by 10 heading into the fourth. Then they held on for the victory.
Brian Holm finished with 11 points to lead all Homestead scorers in the low-scoring game. Keith Merikawa drilled a pair of threes to finish with six points, and Greg Fobbs added six.
Joe Whiteman chipped in with five points, Matt Hoffman three, and Pat Cabell and Jim Kiel two each. Whiteman and Hoffman each hit a three.

But Los Gatos answered back with three pins in a row and coasted from there to the team win.
Fremont slipped to 0-2 in the division with the loss.
