Teens hoop it up
More than 100 students from seven middle schools in Sunnyvale competed in "Basketball Shootout III" at the AMD Sports Center-Columbia Neighborhood Center on Jan. 17.
Competitors, ranging from 13 to 15 years of age, shot basketballs from designated spots on the court. Those who made the most baskets won awards, including $100 and $50 savings bonds and T-shirts.
The competition is part of the Basketball Shootout program, started three years ago to provide youths with a chance to compete in recreational activities and to foster a strong relationship between schools and the police.
The program's sponsors are the city's Parks and Recreation Department, the Public Safety Department and the Public Safety Activities League.
Nearly 600 students participated in preliminary events a week before the shootout, said Kelvin Fountano, co-chairman of Shootout III.
Hundreds of parents were expected to turn out for the event.
Museum exhibits Victorian apparel
The Sunnyvale Historical Museum has opened an exhibit featuring women's clothing styles from the turn of the century.
The museum will display six colorful, lightweight summer dresses, said Chiyo Winters, an assistant at the museum. "They are late-Victorian clothes that were worn for special occasions, such as parties and birthday parties," she said. Items also include bloomers and a top worn as bicycling apparel.
The clothes were donated by pioneer families in Santa Clara Valley, she said.
The first piece of apparel--a white cotton dress with embroidery--was put on display in December. The other clothes will be shown throughout the year, Winters said. The museum is located at Sunnyvale and California avenues.
