    Sunnyvale City Council approves housing program

    Sunnyvale council members unanimously approved the housing program for public school teachers at the city council meeting on Jan. 15.

    On Oct. 9, 2001, the council approved budget modification to begin the implementation process for housing for public school employees, city employees and childcare teachers, which consisted of rental assistance, education and home ownership. According to Sunnyvale Housing Officer Annabel Yurutucu, the rental assistance and education, programs are ready for implementation while the home ownership program will be presented to council at a later date.

    The rental assistance component includes the implementation of a security deposit loan program to assist employees in obtaining rental housing. The education component includes a series of specialized homebuyer education classes and creation of a website that will provide available housing assistance programs and training.

    Yurutucu said staff has selected Housing Education Program, a division of Consumer Credit Counseling Service of San Francisco. The program has extensive experience in providing housing education workshops in partnership with the public, private and nonprofit sectors, she said.

    Community event grant applications due Jan. 25

    Grant funding is available to groups holding community

    events in Sunnyvale, under a new program launched by the city. Designed to encourage groups to hold more community events, the deadline to apply for grant funding this fiscal year is Jan. 25, 2002.

    Community event grants will be awarded on a competitive basis and preference will be given to events expected to attract at least 500 participants. To receive funding, admission to the event must be free and open to the public; the event must be held within city limits; and sponsoring organizations must be nonprofit. Additional eligibility requirements are listed in the application.
