    Reluctance misunderstood

We have difficulty understanding the reluctance of Sunnyvale's City Council to cooperate with the U.S. Department of Justice in interviewing aliens in the United States. On the one hand we are told that the police are sufficiently "sensitive" so as not to intimidate those contacted, and on the other hand there seems to be fear of profiling accusations made by those interviewed.

What actually is going on in city hall is a sleight of hand game. Rather than try to convince you of our opinions that Public Safety wouldn't know sensitivity if they tripped over it in a parking lot, and the council is once again demonstrating the self-consciousness of teenagers, we call to your attention two popular nationally held opinions.

In any society the local police are the first line of defense and often have excellent information of value to forensic specialists. Also, in the 1990s the feds obviously were not up to par concerning terrorism. They need help. In fact, they are asking for it.
